Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your Hong Kong passport must have at least 6 months of remaining validity from your date of entry into Malaysia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward flight ticket within your 30-day visa-free stay. Have a printed or digital copy of your booking ready — budget airlines sometimes check this before letting you board.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
You should have access to at least 500 USD or equivalent in cash, credit cards, or a bank statement. Immigration rarely asks, but if they do, showing a card and a recent statement works fine.Recommended
Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) is mandatory
All travellers must complete the MDAC online within 3 days before arrival. Without it, you may face delays at immigration. Save the QR code on your phone or print it out.
Overstaying has consequences
Even one day over your stamped stay can result in a fine. For overstays beyond 30 days, you risk a re-entry ban. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Print or screenshot your return ticket and first night's hotel booking. Save a digital copy of your travel insurance.
2
Fill out the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)
Complete the MDAC online within 3 days before your arrival. Go to https://imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main. You'll need your passport details, flight info, and accommodation address. Save the confirmation QR code.
3
Arrive at immigration counter
At Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) or other entry points, join the foreign passport queue. Hand over your passport and the MDAC QR code (on your phone or printed). The officer may ask about your stay duration, hotel, and return ticket. Answer briefly and honestly.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (usually 30 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter. You're now free to enter Malaysia.
