Croatian passport holders need an eVisa to visit South Africa in 2026. The eVisa is a single-entry permit for tourism or business, and you must apply online before you travel. No visa-free access is available, so plan ahead.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for a South African eVisa at the Department of Home Affairs portal. Processing takes 5–10 business days, so apply at least 2 weeks before departure. The eVisa is single-entry and valid for 90 days from issue.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have 2 blank pages
Your Croatian passport needs at least 2 consecutive blank pages for entry stamps. South Africa does not require 6 months validity beyond your stay — just cover your travel dates. Airlines may still enforce 6 months, so check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at OR Tambo, Cape Town, and King Shaka routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready. Overstaying the eVisa's validity period results in a fine of 1,000–3,000 ZAR.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Have a confirmed hotel reservation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number. Immigration may ask for this at the border, especially if you're arriving without a pre-booked itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement showing at least 3,000 ZAR per day of your stay, or have a credit card with sufficient limit. Immigration officers rarely ask, but it's better to have proof if questioned.Recommended
Apply early — no visa on arrival
South Africa does not offer visa on arrival for Croatian passport holders. You must have an approved eVisa before you fly. Processing can take up to 3 weeks, so don't leave it to the last minute.
Keep digital copies of everything
Save your eVisa PDF, passport scan, flight booking, and accommodation confirmation on your phone and in cloud storage. If you lose your printed copy, you can show the digital version at immigration.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official South African eVisa website (evisa.dha.gov.za). Fill in your personal details, upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around €20–30) and submit. Processing takes 5–15 business days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF via email. Print a copy and save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and on arrival.
3
Prepare your documents for travel
Before you leave, gather your passport, eVisa printout, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at a South African airport
You'll land at OR Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, or King Shaka (Durban). Go to the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and eVisa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly — it's usually quick.
5
Collect your bags and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're in.
