Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Hungarian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Austria. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all 29 Schengen countries — not just Austria. Airlines at Budapest will check your passport before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Vienna Airport routinely asks for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. A bus or train ticket to a non-Schengen country works too. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air check this at check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or an invitation letter from your host in Austria ready. Border officers at Vienna and Salzburg airports ask for this less often than return tickets, but it's still a standard request during random checks.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Austrian law requires you to have at least €100 per day of your stay, or a total of €1,000 for stays up to 10 days. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works. I've only been asked for this once at Vienna Airport, but keep proof handy.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Austria is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay counts across all Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or other Schengen states, that time counts toward your 90-day limit.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Austria. If it expires sooner, you may be denied boarding or entry. Check your passport now and renew if needed.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Print or save digital copies of your return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Keep them in a dedicated folder on your phone.
2
Arrive at the airport in Austria
At Vienna International Airport (VIE) or any other Austrian airport, follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' or 'All Passports'. Join the queue for non-Schengen arrivals. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
3
Passport control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and proof of onward travel. Answer clearly and briefly. They may stamp your passport with the entry date.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim if you have checked luggage. Then head to customs (green channel for most travellers) and exit into the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

As a Hungarian passport holder, you can stay in Austria for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen Area rule. If you want to stay longer, you'll need to apply for a residence permit before your 90 days expire.
No, you don't need a visa for short-term remote work as long as you're not employed by an Austrian company. You can work remotely for your Hungarian employer or as a freelancer for clients outside Austria. If you plan to work for an Austrian employer, you'll need a work visa.
Overstaying can result in fines, a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area, and potential deportation. The fine amount varies but can be several hundred euros. Always track your days carefully — use the EU's Schengen calculator app if needed.
No, you cannot extend a visa-free stay. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit (e.g., for work, study, or family reunification) at the local immigration office (Magistrat) in Austria before your 90 days are up. The process takes several weeks, so apply early.
Yes, if you stay longer than 3 days, you must register your address with the local registration office (Meldeamt) within 3 days of arrival. Your accommodation provider (hotel, hostel, or landlord) usually handles this. If staying with friends or family, you need to do it yourself.
Always carry your passport or a copy. Police can ask for ID at any time. Keep a digital copy of your passport, return ticket, and accommodation booking on your phone. You don't need to carry the originals everywhere, but have them accessible.
No, travel insurance is not mandatory for visa-free entry. However, it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Austria are high — a simple hospital visit can cost hundreds of euros. A basic policy covering medical emergencies and repatriation is cheap and worth it.
