Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Hungary
Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Norway. As a Schengen member, Norway enforces the 90/180-day rule — you can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen countries, not just Norway.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration at Oslo Gardermoen and other Norwegian ports of entry routinely asks for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return ticket or a ticket to a non-Schengen country ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact details ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means
Norway can ask you to show you have enough money for your stay. A common benchmark is around 500 NOK (approx. €45) per day. A recent bank statement or credit card usually satisfies this check.Recommended
Schengen rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay is shared across all 27 Schengen countries. Time spent in France, Germany, Italy, etc., counts toward your limit. Use a Schengen calculator to track your days.
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel. Airlines may deny boarding if your passport doesn't meet this requirement.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save all confirmations as screenshots or PDFs on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at a Norwegian airport or border
You'll enter through Oslo Gardermoen, Bergen, or another Schengen airport. Since Hungary is also Schengen, there are no passport checks on flights from other Schengen countries — you just walk through. If arriving from outside Schengen, you queue at passport control.
3
Present your passport at immigration
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and accommodation. Answer honestly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or proof of funds — have them ready.
4
Receive entry stamp (if applicable)
If you arrive from outside Schengen, you'll get an entry stamp. If you arrive from another Schengen country, there's no stamp — your entry is recorded in the Schengen Information System. Keep any boarding passes as proof of entry.

Frequently asked questions

No. Hungary is a Schengen member, and Norway is also part of the Schengen area. You can stay visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits.
Up to 90 days within any rolling 180-day period. This is shared across all Schengen countries — so if you've already spent time in France or Germany, that counts toward your 90-day limit.
Generally no. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances, such as medical emergencies or force majeure. You would need to apply to the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) before your 90 days expire.
Your valid passport (6+ months validity), a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation for your first night, and proof of sufficient funds for your stay. Travel insurance is strongly recommended but not always checked.
No. The visa-free stay is for tourism and business visits only. If you plan to work remotely for a foreign employer, you're still technically a tourist — but if you stay longer than 90 days or work for a Norwegian company, you need a work permit.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen area, and difficulties with future visa applications. Always track your days carefully — use a Schengen calculator app if needed.
If you're staying for less than 90 days, no registration is required. If you plan to stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you must register with the police or the UDI within the first few days.
