Good news: Indonesian passport holders can visit Japan visa-free for up to 15 days in 2026. This is strictly for tourism or short business visits — no work or long-term stays allowed.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in Japan
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just enough to cover your stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound flight from Japan
Immigration officers at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return ticket ready — enforcement varies by officer, but it's better to have it than to argue at the counter.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration rarely asks for it, but if they do, not having it can delay your entry.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Officers may ask how you'll support yourself during your stay. Have a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least ¥100,000 (roughly $700 USD) for a 15-day trip.Recommended
Visit Japan WebJapan's digital pre-arrival registration at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp. Enter passport details, flight info, and customs declaration. You get a QR code that lets you use the fast lane at Narita, Haneda, and Kansai.

15 days is strict — no extensions
The visa-free period is exactly 15 days from the day you enter. There is no way to extend it. If you need more time, apply for a visa before you travel.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), book your return/onward ticket, and confirm your first night accommodation. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web and arrange a local SIM or eSIM.
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport
You'll go through immigration at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or other international airports. Have your passport, return ticket (screenshot or print), and accommodation confirmation ready.
3
Present documents to immigration officer
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer may ask about your itinerary, purpose of visit, and how you'll support yourself. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Receive entry permission
If approved, you'll get a landing permission stamp valid for up to 15 days. The officer will write the allowed stay duration on the stamp.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from baggage claim, go through customs (declare any restricted items), and you're free to enter Japan.

Frequently asked questions

No. The 15-day visa-free period cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate before you travel.
You need to apply for a visa (e.g., tourist visa for up to 90 days) at the Japanese embassy in Jakarta or the consulate in Surabaya, Medan, or Denpasar before your trip. Processing takes 5–7 working days and costs around ¥3,000 (about IDR 300,000).
If you stay in the international transit area and don't pass immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport, you'll need a visa or qualify for the 15-day visa-free entry.
No. The visa-free entry is strictly for tourism, short business meetings, or visiting family. Any paid work or study requires the appropriate visa.
Overstaying is a serious offense. You may be detained, fined, deported, and banned from re-entering Japan for several years. Always leave before your allowed stay expires.
Not officially required, but immigration officers may ask how you'll support yourself. Having a credit card or a few hundred dollars in cash (JPY) is wise.
No, it's optional. But it speeds up immigration by letting you pre-submit your arrival information. You can still fill out a paper form at the airport.
