Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Apply on arrival at Colombo airport
Indonesian passport holders can get a visa on arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo. Pay the fee in USD (typically $50–$60 for a 30-day stay) at the counter before immigration. Have your return ticket and hotel booking ready — the officer may ask to see both.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Sri Lanka enforces the 6-month passport validity rule strictly. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. Carry a photocopy of the bio page as backup.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa on arrival
Immigration officers at Colombo airport routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return ticket or a ticket to your next destination ready. Without it, you may be refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. A simple booking printout or email works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash, card, or bank statement
Officers occasionally ask if you have enough money for your stay. Carry at least $500 USD in cash or have a credit card with a decent limit. A recent bank statement on your phone also works.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa-on-arrival fee must be paid in cash — US dollars or Sri Lankan rupees. Credit cards are not accepted. Bring enough cash to cover the fee and any immediate expenses.
30-day stay, not 30 days from issue
Your visa is valid for 30 days from the date you enter Sri Lanka, not from the date the visa is issued. Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine of $50 USD per day.

What happens at the border

1
Fill out the arrival card
On the plane or at the airport, grab a Sri Lanka arrival card. Fill in your passport details, flight info, and accommodation address. Keep it with your passport.
2
Go to the visa-on-arrival counter
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'E-Visa' counters (usually before immigration). Hand over your passport, arrival card, and $50 USD. The officer will process and stick the visa in your passport.
3
Proceed to immigration
With the visa sticker in your passport, join the immigration queue. Present your passport, arrival card, and return ticket if asked. The officer will stamp you in for 30 days.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then walk through customs. You're in Sri Lanka.
