Irish passport holders can get a visa on arrival in Sri Lanka for tourism, valid for up to 30 days. This is available at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport and a few other entry points. As of 2025, the process is straightforward — just have your documents ready and pay the fee at the counter.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Sri Lanka
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from the day you plan to leave Sri Lanka. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. Carry a photocopy of the bio-data page as backup.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for all visitors entering Sri Lanka
Immigration officers at Bandaranaike International Airport always ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. Budget airlines are especially strict about this before boarding.Required
Visa on arrival
Available at Colombo airport for Irish passport holders
You can get a visa on arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport for $35–$50 USD (single entry, 30 days). Pay in cash — USD, EUR, or GBP accepted. Have your passport, return ticket, and hotel address ready. The queue can take 20–40 minutes.Check visa detailsRequired
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to show at immigration
Immigration officers may ask for your hotel booking or a letter of invitation from your host. Have a printed confirmation or a digital copy on your phone. If you are staying with friends, get their address and phone number written down.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to show if asked
Officers may request evidence of at least $50 USD per day for your stay. A bank statement from the last 3 months or a credit card with sufficient limit works. Keep a printed copy in your carry-on.Recommended
Cash is king at the visa counter
The visa on arrival counter at Colombo airport prefers cash in USD, EUR, or LKR. Credit cards may not work. Bring at least $50 USD in cash to avoid being turned away.
Visa on arrival is only at Colombo airport
If you're arriving by land or sea (e.g., from India via ferry), you must apply for an ETA online before travel. The visa on arrival is not available at land borders or other airports.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the visa on arrival counter
After landing at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. There's a dedicated counter before passport control. Queue up, present your passport, return ticket, and accommodation proof. Pay the fee (cash preferred). The officer will issue a visa sticker valid for 30 days.
2
Proceed to passport control
With the visa sticker in your passport, join the main passport control queue. Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will stamp you in. Keep the arrival card (if given) — you'll need it when leaving.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel. Then proceed through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You're now officially in Sri Lanka.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa on arrival is only available at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). If you're arriving by land from India (via the ferry or the land border at Talaimannar), you need to apply for an ETA online before travel. The ETA costs about $35 USD and is processed within 24 hours.
The visa on arrival allows a stay of up to 30 days. It is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a different visa type (like a tourist visa extension through the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo) before your 30 days expire.
You will be denied entry. The 6-month validity requirement is strictly enforced. If your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date, renew it before you travel. No exceptions.
Yes, you need a confirmed onward ticket to any destination outside Sri Lanka. It doesn't have to be a return to Ireland — just proof you're leaving Sri Lanka. A bus or ferry ticket to India works too, as long as it's confirmed.
It's risky. The visa on arrival counter prefers cash in USD, EUR, or LKR. Some counters may accept credit cards, but it's not guaranteed. Bring at least $50 USD in cash to be safe.
Yes, you'll be given an arrival card on the plane or at the airport. Fill it out before you reach the counter. It asks for basic info: flight number, passport details, address in Sri Lanka. Keep the departure portion — you'll need it when leaving.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined approximately $50 USD per day (or equivalent in LKR) for each day overstayed. In extreme cases, you could be banned from re-entering Sri Lanka. If you need more time, apply for an extension before your visa expires.
