Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Thailand
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from the day you leave Thailand. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. Immigration officers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang enforce this strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound flight within 60 days
You need a flight out of Thailand within 60 days of arrival. Immigration officers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang check this regularly, especially if you arrive on a budget airline. A bus, train, or ferry ticket to a neighbouring country also works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration rarely asks for this, but having a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host speeds things up if they do. A booking.com reservation with a cancellation policy works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family
Immigration can ask you to show 20,000 THB in cash (about €520) or a bank statement. In practice, they rarely ask Irish passport holders, but carry the cash or have a screenshot of your balance ready just in case.Recommended
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)TDAC
Online pre-registration — optional but saves time
Fill in your passport, flight, and accommodation details at tdac.immigration.go.th before you fly. It's free, takes 2 minutes, and gives you a QR code that lets you use the faster immigration lane at major airports. Not mandatory, but worth doing.Register on TDACOptional
Passport validity is strict
Airlines check this before you board. If your passport expires within 6 months of your arrival date, you'll be denied boarding. No exceptions.
TDAC saves time at the airport
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is free and optional, but completing it online before you fly can cut your immigration queue time significantly. Do it at tdac.immigration.go.th.
60 days is generous — plan accordingly
With 60 days visa-free, you have plenty of time to explore. No need to rush. Just remember to leave before day 60 or face overstay fines.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book a return or onward ticket. Save a screenshot of your booking confirmation and hotel address. Optionally complete the TDAC online form.
2
Arrive at a Thai airport
You'll land at Suvarnabhumi (BKK), Don Mueang (DMK), Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX), or another international airport. Follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'.
3
Queue at immigration
Join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. If you completed TDAC, have the confirmation handy (screenshot or printed).
4
Present documents to the officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket or hotel booking. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 60-day visa-free entry.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Thailand.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 60-day visa-free entry is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Thailand and re-enter (land border or flight) to get a new 60-day stamp, or apply for a tourist visa (e.g., 60-day single entry) before you travel.
You will be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Thai immigration. Renew your passport before you travel.
If you stay in the international transit area and don't pass through immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you leave the airport or have a layover longer than 12 hours, you'll need to enter visa-free (which you qualify for) or get a visa.
Yes, it's optional. But many travellers report shorter queues if they've completed it. It's free and takes 5 minutes online. You don't need to print it — a screenshot on your phone is fine.
Yes, Irish passport holders can enter visa-free at land border crossings. The same 60-day stay applies. However, land border entries may be scrutinised more closely if you've been in Thailand recently.
Overstay is fined at 500 THB per day (about €13), capped at 20,000 THB. You'll also get an overstay stamp, which can cause problems for future entries. Avoid it.
No, there's no official requirement for Irish passport holders to show proof of funds. But if immigration suspects you're working illegally or can't support yourself, they may ask. Having a credit card or bank statement handy is wise.
