What happens at the border

1
Apply for your visa online
Go to the Australian Department of Home Affairs website (homeaffairs.gov.au) and create an ImmiAccount. Complete the Visitor visa (subclass 600) application. You'll need your passport details, travel plans, and possibly financial documents. The fee starts at AUD 190 (about USD 125).
2
Wait for processing
Processing times vary — from a few days to several weeks. Check the current processing times on the Home Affairs website. You'll receive an email when a decision is made. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have your visa.
3
Receive your visa grant
Once approved, you'll get a visa grant notification with your visa number and conditions. This is linked electronically to your passport — no stamp or label is placed in it. Keep a copy of the notification for your records.
4
Arrive in Australia
At the airport, go through passport control. Have your passport ready — the officer will scan it and may ask about your trip. You can use the SmartGate kiosks at major airports (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane) if you're an ePassport holder, but Israeli passports may not be eligible — just follow the signs.
5
Clear customs and quarantine
After passport control, collect your bags and go through customs. Australia has strict biosecurity laws — declare any food, plant material, or animal products. Failure to declare can result in fines up to AUD 2,664.

Transiting through Australia

Transit visa required

Israeli citizens transiting through Australia generally need a Transit visa (subclass 771) unless they hold a valid Australian visa or meet specific exemptions. However, if you are transiting airside for less than 8 hours and do not need to pass through immigration, you may be eligible for a transit waiver, but this is not guaranteed. Always check with the Australian Department of Home Affairs before travel.

Exceptions & conditions
  • Holders of a valid Australian visa (including Visitor visa) do not need a separate transit visa.
  • Citizens of certain countries may be eligible for a transit waiver if they remain airside and depart within 8 hours, but Israel is not automatically exempt; check with the airline or embassy.
  • If you have a confirmed onward ticket and stay in the international transit area, you may not need a visa for short transits, but this is at the discretion of border officials.

Yes. Even if you're only changing planes in Australia, you need a valid visa. There is no transit visa for Israeli citizens — you must hold a Visitor visa or another approved visa. Apply well in advance.
You won't be allowed to board your flight. Airlines are required to check that all passengers have valid Australian visas before departure. If you somehow arrive without one, you'll be detained and put on the next flight back at your own expense.
No. The Visitor visa (subclass 600) is for tourism and visiting family only. You cannot work or study for more than 3 months. If you want to work, you need a different visa, like a Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) — but Israeli citizens are not eligible for that one. Check the Home Affairs website for options.
You'll need a scanned copy of your passport's bio page, a recent passport-style photo, and details of your travel plans.
