Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply at the official Vietnam eVisa portal at least 3 working days before departure. The eVisa costs $25 USD and allows a single or multiple entry stay of up to 90 days. Print the approval letter and bring it with your passport to immigration.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Vietnam. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration officers enforce it strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Vietnam
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return flight ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they may deny entry if you cannot show one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays at the counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Officers may ask for proof of at least $500 USD in cash or a recent bank statement. ATMs are widely available in cities, but carrying some cash in USD or VND helps.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Vietnam, not from your departure date. If it's close, renew before you apply.
eVisa is single entry only
The eVisa allows one entry. If you leave Vietnam (even for a day trip to Cambodia), you'll need a new eVisa to re-enter.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to the official Vietnamese eVisa website (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn). Fill in your personal details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport data page. Pay the fee (around $25 USD) with a credit card. Processing takes 3-5 working days.
2
Receive and print eVisa
You'll get an email with your eVisa approval letter (PDF). Print it in colour and save a copy on your phone. Keep it with your passport.
3
Arrive at Vietnamese airport
At the airport (e.g., Noi Bai in Hanoi or Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City), go to the immigration counter. Present your passport, printed eVisa, and return ticket if asked. The officer will stamp you in. No separate visa-on-arrival letter needed.
4
Prepare for entry interview
Immigration officers may ask simple questions: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying. Answer clearly. Have your hotel address and return flight details ready.
