Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your departure date from Brazil
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity remaining from the day you leave Brazil. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding. Brazil does not make exceptions for shorter validity.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Brazil
Immigration officers at Brazilian airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. Overstaying the 90-day visa-free period incurs a fine of R$100 per day.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays at the immigration counter.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or credit card
Carry a recent bank statement or a credit card showing available credit. Immigration may ask how you'll support yourself during your stay — a quick glance at your phone banking app usually suffices.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Brazil, not from your departure date. Check your passport expiry before booking flights.
Overstaying is costly
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. Overstaying results in a fine of about R$100 per day and may lead to a ban from re-entering Brazil for up to 5 years.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you fly, ensure your passport has 6+ months validity and at least 1 blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save digital copies on your phone.
2
Arrive at a Brazilian airport
You'll land at one of Brazil's international airports: Guarulhos (GRU) in São Paulo, Galeão (GIG) in Rio, or Brasília (BSB). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Immigration'.
3
Queue at immigration
Join the line for 'Foreign Passports' or 'All Passports'. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will stamp your passport and may ask about your stay duration and accommodation.
4
Collect baggage and exit
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Brazil. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and domestic flights.
