Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Colombia. Airlines check this at check-in, and Colombian immigration officers enforce it at arrival.Required
Check-Mig pre-registrationCheck-Mig: Colombia's mandatory online pre-registration form at migracioncolombia.gov.co. Complete it within 72 hours before your flight — it takes under 5 minutes.
Online form, free
Complete the Check-Mig form at migracioncolombia.gov.co within 72 hours before your flight. Takes under 5 minutes — you enter passport details, flight info, and accommodation. Have the confirmation QR code ready on your phone or printed.Open Check-Mig formRequired
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from Colombia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward flight ticket. A printed itinerary or digital booking confirmation works. If you're overlanding to a neighboring country, have a bus ticket or border crossing plan ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host letter
Have your first night's hotel reservation or a letter from your host ready. Officers rarely ask for it, but if they do, a printed booking confirmation or a digital copy on your phone suffices.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash, card, or bank statement
Carry a credit card or around $500 USD equivalent in cash or traveler's checks. Officers almost never check, but having a bank statement or card available covers you if asked.Recommended
Check-Mig is mandatory — do not skip it
You must complete the Check-Mig form 1-5 days before your flight. Without it, you may be denied boarding or entry. It's free and takes 10 minutes at migracioncolombia.gov.co. Save the confirmation on your phone.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Colombia, not from your departure date. If your passport expires in less than 6 months, renew it before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Complete Check-Mig Online
Go to migracioncolombia.gov.co and fill out the Check-Mig form. Do this 1-5 days before your flight. You'll need your flight details, passport info, and first accommodation address. The form is free and takes about 10 minutes.
2
Arrive at Colombian Immigration
At any Colombian airport (Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, etc.), follow signs to 'Migración' or 'Extranjeros'. Join the queue for 'Pasaportes de todos los países' (all passports). Have your passport, Check-Mig confirmation (digital or printed), and return ticket ready.
3
Receive Entry Stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 90-day entry. Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If the officer writes a shorter stay, ask politely for the full 90 days. Keep the stamped card (if given) with your passport.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave Colombia before 90 days. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a visa (e.g., a tourist visa extension or a different visa type) before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can result in fines and entry bans.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined approximately 2-3 USD per day overstayed, and you may be banned from re-entering Colombia for a period. Always leave on time or apply for a visa extension before your 90 days are up.
Not required for entry from Iceland, but recommended if you plan to visit the Amazon, the Caribbean coast, or other jungle areas. Some border crossings may ask for proof. The vaccine is free at many Colombian health centers if you need it after arrival.
No. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it's shorter, you'll be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before traveling.
Check-Mig is a mandatory online form that replaces the old paper arrival card. You must complete it 1-5 days before your flight. It's free at migracioncolombia.gov.co. You'll need your flight number, passport details, and first accommodation address. Save the confirmation as a PDF or screenshot.
Yes, you need proof of onward travel — either a return flight or a ticket to a third country. A bus ticket or ferry booking may also work, but a flight is the safest option. Immigration may ask to see it.
Yes, you can work remotely for a foreign employer. Colombia allows digital nomads on tourist entry. You cannot work for a Colombian company or receive payment from a Colombian source without a work visa.
