Icelandic passport holders can get a visa on arrival at Iranian airports. It's valid for up to 30 days and costs €50–€75. The process is straightforward but you need a few documents ready before you fly.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
You must apply for an Iranian eVisa at e-visa.ir/en/ before you travel. Processing takes a few working days, and you will receive a visa authorisation code to present at the airport or border. The visa on arrival option is available at major airports, but pre-approval via the eVisa portal is more reliable.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your Icelandic passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Iran. Airlines check this before boarding, and immigration at Imam Khomeini Airport enforces it strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Tehran's airport routinely ask for proof of a return or onward flight. Have your printed or digital ticket ready — they may deny boarding if you cannot show one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
You need a confirmed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Iran. Immigration may ask for the address and phone number of where you are staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Cash or bank statement
Carry enough cash (USD or euros) or a bank statement showing you can support yourself during your stay. Immigration rarely checks, but having $500–$1,000 equivalent in cash avoids problems.Recommended
Women: dress code applies immediately
From the moment you land, women must wear a headscarf and clothing that covers arms and legs. Pack a scarf in your carry-on.
Cash only for visa fee
The visa-on-arrival fee must be paid in cash (euros or US dollars). No cards accepted. Have exact change if possible.
