Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
You need an eVisa to enter Myanmar. Apply at the official Myanmar eVisa Portal (evisa.moip.gov.mm) — the process takes about 15 minutes and costs around $50 USD. Approval usually comes within 3 business days, but apply at least a week before your flight to be safe.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for 6 months beyond your stay
Your Icelandic passport needs at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Myanmar. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration at Yangon or Mandalay will deny boarding if it's short.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Myanmar airports always ask for proof of a return or onward flight out of the country. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they won't let you through without it.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
While not always checked, having a hotel booking or invitation letter from a host can speed things up if the officer asks. Print the confirmation or save it on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Officers rarely ask for bank statements, but carrying around $300–$500 in cash (USD or local kyat) covers you for unexpected questions. ATMs in Myanmar are unreliable, so bring enough cash for your stay.Recommended
eVisa only valid at specific airports
Your eVisa is only valid for entry at Yangon, Mandalay, or Naypyidaw airports. If you arrive by land from Thailand, China, or India, you'll need a different visa. Plan your flight accordingly.
Keep a digital copy of your eVisa
Print your eVisa approval letter and also save a PDF on your phone. If you lose the print, the digital copy can be shown at immigration. Also keep a screenshot of your hotel booking and return ticket.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Myanmar eVisa website (evisa.moip.gov.mm). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport-style photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around USD 50) by credit card. You'll receive a confirmation email.
2
Wait for approval
Processing takes 3–5 working days for most applicants. You'll get an email with your eVisa approval letter. Check your spam folder if it doesn't arrive. Print a copy and save a PDF on your phone.
3
Arrive at Yangon, Mandalay, or Naypyidaw airport
eVisa holders must enter through Yangon International Airport (RGN), Mandalay International Airport (MDL), or Naypyidaw International Airport (NYT). Land border crossings are not allowed with an eVisa.
4
Go through immigration
At the immigration counter, hand over your passport, printed eVisa, and boarding pass. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel booking. Have them ready. You'll get an entry stamp valid for up to 28 days.
