Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Norway. Norway is part of the Schengen zone, so your 90-day visa-free limit applies across all Schengen countries combined, not per country.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Norwegian airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact details.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
You should be able to show you have enough cash, credit, or bank statements to cover your expenses. Norway is expensive — budget at least 500 NOK per day for food, transport, and incidentals.Recommended
Schengen rules apply
Norway is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day allowance is shared across all Schengen countries. Keep track of your days — overstaying can result in fines and future entry bans.
Icelandic passport is strong
Icelandic passport holders enjoy visa-free access to all Schengen countries, including Norway. No visa application needed for short stays.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before travel
Gather your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at Oslo Airport (or other entry point)
At Oslo Gardermoen Airport, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Non-EU Passports' (even though Iceland is in Schengen, you go through the same queue as other non-EU travellers). Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
3
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and accommodation. Answer calmly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check that the stamp is clear and correct before leaving the counter.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're now in Norway.

Frequently asked questions

No, for stays under 90 days you don't need to register. If you plan to stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you'll need a residence permit before you travel.
Extensions are not granted for tourism. If you need to stay longer due to an emergency, contact the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) before your 90 days expire. Overstaying can lead to fines or a re-entry ban.
You must have a valid passport for the entire duration of your stay. If it expires, contact the Icelandic embassy in Oslo immediately to get an emergency travel document.
No, Icelandic passport holders do not need a transit visa for Norway. You can stay in the international transit area without a visa.
No, visa-free entry does not allow you to work. You need a separate work permit. Business meetings, conferences, and short-term training are usually allowed, but actual employment is not.
Stay calm. Ask the officer for the reason in writing. You have the right to contact your embassy (Icelandic embassy in Oslo: +47 23 12 73 00). They can provide consular assistance but cannot override immigration decisions.
