Icelandic passport holders can travel to Sweden visa-free for any purpose, including tourism and business, for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This has been the case since Sweden joined the Schengen Area in 2001. Just show up with your valid passport and you're good to go.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your Icelandic passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Sweden. Since Sweden is in the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — not just Sweden.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen zone
Immigration officers at Swedish airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen area within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host in Sweden. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Swedish border police can ask — 450 SEK per day is the unofficial guideline.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen Area, not just Sweden. If you've already spent time in France or Germany earlier in the year, that counts toward your 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator online to track your days.
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Sweden, not the day you leave. If it expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding by your airline or entry by border police. Check your passport now.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, first-night accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone.
2
Arrive at Arlanda or other Swedish airport
At Stockholm Arlanda (ARN), Göteborg Landvetter (GOT), or any other Swedish airport, follow signs to 'Passport Control' for non-EU arrivals. Since Iceland is in Schengen but not EU, you'll use the non-EU lane.
3
Present your passport to the border officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. Walk through the green 'nothing to declare' exit.
