Italian passport holders can enter the Czech Republic without a visa for short stays. As of 2026, you can travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the duration of your stay in the Czech Republic. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all 27 Schengen countries — your passport just needs to cover the dates you're inside the zone.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Prague Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air also check this at check-in — have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a signed letter from a friend you're staying with. Officers at border control sometimes ask for this, especially if you're arriving without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to roughly €50–€100 per day of your stay. Czech immigration rarely asks for this for EU passport holders, but it's smart to have a recent statement on your phone.Recommended
Schengen zone rules apply
Your 90-day allowance is for the entire Schengen Area, not just the Czech Republic. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen country, that counts toward your 90 days.
Overstaying is serious
Overstaying even by a day can lead to a fine (up to 3,000 EUR) and a re-entry ban. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Prague Václav Havel Airport (or other Schengen entry point)
Since Italy and the Czech Republic are both in Schengen, there are no passport checks when flying directly between them. You'll just walk through the 'EU/EEA' lane. If you're arriving from a non-Schengen country, join the 'All Passports' queue and have your passport and return ticket ready.
2
Present your passport at border control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They might also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation booking. Keep those accessible.
3
Receive entry stamp (if applicable)
If you're entering from outside Schengen, you'll get an entry stamp. If coming from another Schengen country, there's no stamp. Either way, your 90-day clock is running.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After border control, head to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for most tourists). You're free to go.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen rule. The clock resets after you leave the Schengen Area for 90 days.
No, the visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit before your 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines or a ban.
If you're staying in a hotel, they handle the registration for you. If you're staying in a private residence, you must register with the Foreign Police within 3 working days of arrival. Your host can usually do this online.
You'll be denied entry. Renew your passport before you travel. The 6-month validity is calculated from your date of entry, not your departure.
No. The visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or family visits only. Any paid work requires a work visa or permit. Even remote work for a foreign company can be a grey area — check with the Czech embassy if you plan to work remotely.
You must carry your passport or a certified copy at all times. Police can ask for ID. A driver's license is not sufficient. Keep a photocopy of your passport in your hotel safe.
No, but you don't need one — you're visa-free. Just show your passport and you're in.
