Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Italian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Hungary. Since Hungary is in the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — not per country.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen zone
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen area within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host in Hungary. Officers rarely check it, but they can ask — especially if you're arriving without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have a bank statement or cash showing you can cover your expenses. There's no fixed amount, but €50–€100 per day is a safe benchmark. I've never been asked for it at Budapest, but it's in the rules.Recommended
Passport validity is critical
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Hungary. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you will not be allowed to fly.
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90-day allowance is shared across all 27 Schengen countries. Use the EU's online calculator to track your days and avoid overstaying.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before travel
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save all confirmations as screenshots on your phone. Consider getting travel insurance and an eSIM.
2
Arrive at Budapest Airport or other entry point
At Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' (even though you're EU, this queue is for non-Schengen arrivals). Have your passport and any requested documents ready. The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date.
3
Present your documents at immigration
Hand over your passport. If asked, state the purpose of your visit (tourism, business, family visit) and how long you plan to stay. You may be asked to show your return ticket or accommodation booking. Answer clearly and confidently.
4
Receive entry stamp and proceed
The officer will stamp your passport and wave you through. Keep your passport accessible — you may need it for hotel check-in or train travel within Hungary. You're now free to stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
