Italian passport holders can travel to France without a visa for short stays. As of 2026, you can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen Area. Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Italian passport needs to be valid for the entire duration of your stay in France. No minimum validity beyond departure is required for Schengen entry, but airlines may ask for 3 months validity beyond your return date — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at French airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this before boarding — have a printed or digital copy ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a signed letter from your host with their address and contact info. French border officers ask for this often, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card showing at least €65 per day of your stay. Officers rarely ask Italians for this, but if they do, you need to show you're not working illegally.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule
Your 90-day allowance applies to the entire Schengen Area, not just France. If you've already spent time in Spain, Germany, or any other Schengen country in the previous 180 days, those days count toward your limit. Use the EU's official short-stay calculator to track your days.
Passport validity is critical
Airlines check passport validity at check-in. If your passport has less than 6 months validity from your entry date, you may be denied boarding even if you have a valid visa-free status. Renew early.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at passport control
At any French airport (CDG, ORY, NCE, etc.), join the queue for 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' if there's a separate line. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket or accommodation booking.
3
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. This stamp records your entry into the Schengen Area.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then go through customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen Area, so days spent in other Schengen countries count toward the 90-day limit.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a long-stay visa (type D) from the French consulate in Italy before you travel.
No, Italian passport holders do not need a transit visa for any French airport. You can stay in the international transit area without a visa.
You may be denied boarding or entry. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is calculated from your entry date, not your departure date.
No, there is no arrival declaration or registration requirement for Italian citizens staying less than 90 days. You simply enter and leave as you wish.
Technically, the visa-free regime does not permit any work, including remote work for a foreign employer. In practice, short digital nomad stays are rarely questioned, but it's a grey area. For official remote work, consider a French long-stay visa.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 3 years, and a stamp in your passport. Always track your days carefully using the Schengen calculator.
