Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in the Netherlands
Your Italian passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your trip. The Netherlands does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but some airlines may still enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration at Schiphol and other Dutch ports of entry routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. This can be a flight, train, or ferry ticket leaving the Schengen zone within your 90-day visa-free period.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or an invitation letter from a host ready. Dutch border officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €55 per day of your stay. Officers rarely ask for it for Italian passport holders, but it's better to have it ready.Recommended
Schengen Area Rules Apply
The 90-day limit applies to the entire Schengen Area, not just the Netherlands. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or other Schengen countries, those days count toward your 90-day allowance.
Passport Validity Check
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel. Airlines may deny boarding if your passport doesn't meet this requirement.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Schiphol Airport (AMS)
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Passport Control'. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens use the automated e-gates; Italian passport holders can also use e-gates. If the e-gate fails, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Passport Control Interview
The officer will scan your passport and may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, accommodation, return ticket. Answer briefly and honestly. They rarely ask for proof of funds for Italian citizens, but have bank statements or cash ready just in case.
3
Baggage Claim and Customs
After passport control, collect your luggage from the carousel. Proceed through the 'Nothing to Declare' green channel if you have no goods to declare. If you have items over €430 or restricted goods, use the red channel.
4
Exit the Airport
Once through customs, you are free to leave. Follow signs to trains, buses, taxis, or rental cars. Schiphol has direct train connections to Amsterdam Central (15-20 min) and other cities.
