Italian passport holders can visit the UK for tourism, business, or family visits for up to 180 days without a visa. Since Brexit, the rules have stayed simple for 2026. You just need to meet a few entry requirements at the border.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation)
Required for visa-exempt visitors since January 8, 2025
Apply online at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa before you fly. The ETA costs £10, is valid for 2 years, and covers multiple trips. Most applications are approved within minutes, but apply at least 48 hours before departure to be safe.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Italian passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in the UK. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required, but airlines may ask for at least 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
UK Border Force officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a return flight or onward ticket to a third country ready — they may check it at passport control.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel booking confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and contact details ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Immigration can ask how you'll support yourself during your stay. Carry bank statements or a credit card showing you have enough funds for accommodation, food, and transport.Recommended
eGates available for Italian passports
You can use the automated eGates at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, and other major airports. No need to queue for a human officer — just scan your passport and you're through. Your entry is recorded electronically, so you won't get a physical stamp.
No visa extensions from within the UK
You cannot extend your 180-day visa-free stay. If you overstay, you risk a ban from re-entering the UK. Plan your departure date carefully.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at UK border
At airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester, follow the 'All Other Passports' or 'Non-EU' signs. Join the queue for passport control. Have your passport ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand your passport to the Border Force officer. They will scan it and may ask a few questions: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long, and when you're leaving.
3
Answer questions clearly
Keep answers short and honest. Say 'tourism' or 'visiting friends' for purpose. Show your return ticket or accommodation if asked. Don't mention working or studying unless you have a visa for that.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the number of days allowed (usually 180). Check the stamp before walking away.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, go to baggage claim, then through customs (green channel for most tourists). You're in.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free stay is a maximum of 180 days per visit. You cannot extend it from within the UK. If you want to stay longer, you need to apply for a visa (e.g., a Standard Visitor visa or a work/study visa) before you travel.
Yes. Any proof of onward travel works — a ferry ticket, Eurotunnel booking, or even a bus ticket. The key is showing you're leaving the UK before your 180 days are up.
You'll likely be refused entry. Border Force officers check passport validity strictly. Renew your passport before traveling if it's close to expiring.
Technically, the visa-free rules don't allow any work, including remote work for a foreign employer. In practice, brief email checks or calls are usually fine, but don't set up a regular work routine. If you need to work, consider a Digital Nomad visa (the UK doesn't have one yet as of 2026).
No, if you're an Italian passport holder transiting airside (not passing through UK border control) and you have a confirmed onward flight within 24 hours. If you need to enter the UK (e.g., to switch airports), you'll need a visa or use the visa-free rules for a short stay.
You'll be given a written refusal notice explaining why. Common reasons: insufficient funds, no return ticket, or unclear purpose of visit. You can appeal, but it's complex. Best to have all documents ready and answer questions honestly.
Yes. Italian passports are eligible for the UK eGates (automated passport control) at most major airports. This speeds up entry — just scan your passport and look at the camera. No stamp is issued, but your entry is recorded electronically.
