ETA-IL applicationETA-IL: Israel's Electronic Travel Authorisation, mandatory for all visa-exempt nationals since August 2024. Apply free at israel-entry.piba.gov.il — usually approved instantly.
Electronic Travel Authorisation
Apply for ETA-IL at israel-entry.piba.gov.il before departure. The application is free and usually approved instantly — you get a confirmation email. Show the approval email or screenshot at check-in and upon arrival.Apply for ETA-ILRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for duration of stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Israel. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Israeli law, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave Israel within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — airlines also check this at check-in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient means of support
Have a bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. There is no fixed minimum amount, but around 1,500 ILS (about $400 USD) per week is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Entry card instead of stamp
Israel no longer stamps passports for most visitors — you'll receive a small entry card instead. This is helpful if you plan to travel to countries that restrict entry for people with Israeli stamps.
Overstaying is serious
The 90-day visa-free period is strict. Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine of about 500 ILS and a ban from re-entering for up to 10 years. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity and one blank page. Book your return ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of your booking confirmations and insurance policy on your phone.
2
Arrive at Ben Gurion Airport (TLV)
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control' (also called 'Border Control'). There are separate queues for Israeli citizens and foreigners. Join the 'Foreign Passports' line. Have your passport and return ticket screenshot ready.
3
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask a few questions: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long you plan to stay. Answer briefly and honestly. They will give you an entry card valid for up to 90 days.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After passport control, go to the baggage claim area. Then pass through customs (usually green channel for nothing to declare). You're now free to exit the arrivals hall.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave before 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in a fine of about 500 ILS and a ban from re-entering for up to 10 years.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling to Israel.
If you are transiting through Ben Gurion Airport and staying airside (not passing through immigration), you do not need a visa. But if you need to leave the transit area, you must meet the same visa-free requirements.
Yes, Italian passport holders are generally allowed entry regardless of previous travel to other countries. However, if you have stamps from Iran, Syria, Lebanon, or other countries considered hostile by Israel, you may face additional questioning. It's not an automatic ban, but be prepared for extra scrutiny.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended because medical costs in Israel are high. A simple doctor visit can cost $100+, and a hospital stay can run into thousands. Get a policy that covers medical evacuation.
The currency is the Israeli New Shekel (ILS). Credit cards are widely accepted in cities, but it's good to have some cash for small shops, taxis, and markets. ATMs are plentiful at the airport and in towns.
