Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your entire stay in Turkey
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay. Turkey does not enforce a 6-month validity rule for Italian passport holders — as long as it covers your trip dates, you are fine.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Turkey
Immigration officers at Istanbul Airport and other entry points routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version on your phone ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Border officers can ask for evidence of sufficient funds — roughly €50–€100 per day of stay. A bank statement or credit card usually satisfies this request.Recommended
90-day limit is rolling
The 90-day visa-free stay is calculated over any 180-day period. If you leave and re-enter, the clock resets only after you've been outside Turkey for 90 days. Keep track of your days — overstaying even by one day can cause fines or a re-entry ban.
Overstaying penalties
Overstaying your 90-day limit can result in a fine of around 500-1000 Turkish Lira per day, plus a ban from re-entering Turkey for up to 5 years. If you're unsure about your days, check with the local immigration office before your visa-free period ends.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Turkish immigration
At Istanbul Airport (IST) or any other entry point, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'All Passports'. Join the queue for non-Turkish citizens. Have your passport ready.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your photo, validity, and may ask your purpose of visit, length of stay, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date and the allowed stay (usually 90 days). Check the stamp before walking away — if the date is wrong, ask for a correction immediately.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.
