Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA / eVisaYou need to get this online approval before you fly – it's not available on arrival for Italian passport holders.
Apply online before travel
Italian citizens must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before departure. Apply at the official Sri Lanka ETA website (https://eta.gov.lk/) at least a few days before travel. The ETA is valid for a short stay (typically 30 days) and is not extendable.Required
Passport validityIf your passport expires sooner than 6 months after you plan to leave Sri Lanka, you'll be denied entry.
At least 6 months remaining
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of departure from Sri Lanka. Check your passport's expiry date well in advance.Required
Blank passport pagesYou need a clean, empty page in your passport for the arrival stamp – otherwise you may be turned away.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least one blank page for the entry stamp. Ensure no visa stickers or markings occupy the page where the immigration officer will stamp.Required
Return or onward ticketHave your flight booking or e-ticket ready – they want to see that you plan to leave Sri Lanka.
Proof of departure
You must be able to show a confirmed return or onward ticket to a destination outside Sri Lanka, with a departure date within your permitted stay. Immigration may ask to see this at check-in or upon arrival.Required
Proof of fundsIt's a good idea to carry a bank statement or credit card – immigration might ask how you'll support yourself.
Sufficient for your stay
You should be able to demonstrate you have sufficient funds to cover your expenses during your stay in Sri Lanka. This is not always checked, but be prepared to show cash, credit cards, or bank statements if asked.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any extra arrival form – just your ETA and passport.
Not required
No separate arrival declaration is required for Sri Lanka for Italian citizens. The ETA serves as your entry authorization. Not required
Use the official ETA website only
There are many third-party sites that look official but charge inflated fees. The only official site is https://eta.gov.lk/. Double-check the URL before entering your passport details.
ETA is not extendable
The 30-day tourist ETA cannot be extended in Sri Lanka. If you think you might need more time, consider applying for a longer-stay visa before you travel, or plan to leave and re-enter.
Italians get fast approvals
Italian passport holders have a high approval rate and typically get their ETA within 24 hours. Still, apply at least 3 days ahead to avoid any last-minute stress.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your ETA online
Go to https://eta.gov.lk/ and fill out the application. Choose 'Tourist ETA'. Pay the fee (around $50 USD for a 30-day stay) with a credit or debit card. You'll get a confirmation email with a reference number.
2
Wait for approval
Most approvals come through within 24 hours, but allow up to 72 hours. Check your email (including spam) for the approval notice. Print a copy or save it on your phone.
3
Arrive at the airport in Sri Lanka
At Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, head to the immigration counters. Have your passport, boarding pass, and ETA approval ready. The officer will stamp your passport — that's your entry. No separate visa on arrival process needed.
4
Proceed to baggage claim
After clearing immigration, collect your bags and go through customs. If you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel.

Frequently asked questions

The tourist ETA allows a stay of up to 30 days. It's not extendable, so if you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave and re-enter or apply for a different visa type before you travel.
The official fee for a 30-day tourist ETA is around $50 USD. Be careful — there are third-party websites that charge extra. Always use the official site: https://eta.gov.lk/.
Technically, there's an on-arrival ETA facility at the airport, but it's not guaranteed and can involve long queues. It's much safer to apply online before you fly. The online application takes just a few minutes.
Rejections are rare for Italian citizens, but if it happens, you'll get an email explaining why. You can reapply with corrected information or contact the Sri Lankan embassy in Rome for help. Don't book non-refundable flights until your ETA is approved.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Italy isn't one, so if you're flying directly from Italy, you don't need it. But if you've been traveling in Africa or South America before Sri Lanka, check the requirements.
No. The tourist ETA is strictly for tourism, visiting friends/family, or short leisure activities. Any kind of work, including unpaid volunteering, requires a different visa. If you're caught working on a tourist ETA, you risk fines and deportation.
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). You can exchange money at the airport or use ATMs, which are widely available in cities. Credit cards are accepted in many hotels and restaurants, but cash is king in smaller towns.
