Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from the day you land in Thailand. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa-free entry
Immigration officers at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang routinely ask for proof of departure. Budget airlines like AirAsia and Nok Air check this before issuing a boarding pass. Have a printed or digital copy of your onward ticket ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a return ticket. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number works.Recommended
Proof of funds
20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family
Immigration can ask to see cash, a bank statement, or a credit card showing you have at least 20,000 THB (about $550 USD) for your stay. In practice, this is rarely checked for short visits, but have proof accessible.Recommended
Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)Thailand Digital Arrival Card — a free 2-minute online pre-registration at tdac.immigration.go.th. Not mandatory, but gets you through the immigration queue faster.
Optional online pre-registration
Register at tdac.immigration.go.th before your flight — it takes 2 minutes and gives you a QR code that speeds up the immigration queue. Not mandatory, but saves time at the counter.Register on TDACOptional
60-day stay is not extendable
If you want to stay longer than 60 days, you must leave Thailand and re-enter (visa run) or apply for a tourist visa before you travel. Overstaying is expensive and can get you banned.
TDAC saves time at immigration
Complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th before you fly. You'll get a QR code that lets you use a faster lane — worth the 5 minutes it takes.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before flying
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Optionally complete the TDAC online form and save the QR code. Print or screenshot everything.
2
Arrive at Thai immigration counter
At Bangkok (BKK or DMK), Phuket, Chiang Mai, or any other international airport, follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Immigration'. Join the 'Foreign Passport' queue. Have your passport, boarding pass, and (if you did TDAC) the QR code ready.
3
Present documents and get stamped
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will check your passport, take a photo, and stamp you in. You'll get a 60-day stay permit. Keep the departure card (if issued) inside your passport — you'll need it when leaving.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs (green channel for most). You're now legally in Thailand for up to 60 days.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry for Italian passport holders is not extendable. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Thailand and re-enter (land border or flight) to get a new 60-day stamp, or apply for a tourist visa (e.g., 60-day single entry) before you travel. Overstaying costs 500 THB per day and can get you banned.
Overstay is fined at 500 THB per day (max 20,000 THB). You pay at the airport immigration office before departure. Overstays of 90+ days can result in a 1-year ban. Always leave on time or get a visa beforehand.
No, if you're transiting and staying airside (don't pass immigration), you don't need a visa. If you plan to leave the airport or stay overnight, you'll need the visa-free entry (60 days) or a visa. For transits under 12 hours, you can usually stay in the transit area without a visa.
Yes, Italian passport holders can enter Thailand via land borders visa-free for 60 days. The same rules apply: passport valid 6+ months, return ticket (or onward travel), and proof of accommodation. Some land borders may have limited hours — check before you go.
You will be denied boarding by the airline and denied entry by Thai immigration. There are no exceptions. Renew your passport before traveling. If you're already in Thailand and your passport expires, contact your embassy for an emergency travel document.
Officially, you should be able to show at least 20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family if asked. In practice, this is almost never requested from Italian passport holders. Still, having a credit card or cash handy is wise.
Yes, it's optional. But completing it online before you fly (free at tdac.immigration.go.th) gives you a QR code that lets you use a faster lane at some airports. It's a no-brainer — takes 5 minutes and saves you 20-30 minutes in line.
