Italian passport holders can get a Visa on Arrival (VoA) for tourism, business, or transit stays in Indonesia. The VoA costs 500,000 IDR (about €30) and is valid for 30 days. You can extend it once for another 30 days at any immigration office.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at major Indonesian airports (Soekarno-Hatta, Ngurah Rai, Juanda, etc.) and seaports. Pay $35 USD in cash (or IDR equivalent) at the visa-on-arrival counter before immigration. The visa is valid for 30 days and cannot be extended.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date
Indonesia strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding. Your passport also needs at least two blank pages for the visa sticker and entry stamp.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa-on-arrival entry
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. If you are flying out of Indonesia to a different country, that onward ticket works too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Immigration may ask for your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Have a printed or digital copy of your booking confirmation ready. If you are staying with friends or family, a simple letter with their address and contact number works.Recommended
Proof of funds
At least $1,000 USD or equivalent
Officers may ask to see you have enough money for your stay. Carry cash (USD or IDR) or have a bank statement showing at least $1,000 USD. Credit cards are accepted at most hotels and restaurants in tourist areas, but cash is king for smaller purchases.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Indonesian immigration will deny entry if your passport has less than 6 months of validity from your entry date. This is non-negotiable. Check your passport before booking flights.
Cash is king for the VoA fee
While some airports accept credit cards, card machines can be unreliable. Bring 500,000 IDR in cash (or about €30 in USD) to avoid delays. ATMs are available after immigration, but you'll need the fee before you get through.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
After landing at any Indonesian international airport (Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, etc.), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' counters. Do not go to the 'Foreign Passport' line for pre-arranged visas.
2
Pay the VoA fee
Hand over your passport and pay 500,000 IDR (cash only, in Indonesian Rupiah or USD). Some airports accept credit cards, but cash is safer. You'll get a receipt and a sticker placed in your passport.
3
Proceed to immigration check
Take your passport with the VoA sticker and receipt to the immigration officer. They'll stamp you in for 30 days. Keep the receipt — you'll need it if you extend.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After the stamp, collect your bags and head to customs. There's an electronic customs declaration form (e-CD) you can fill online before arrival or at a kiosk in the airport.

Yes, you can extend it once for another 30 days. The extension costs about 500,000 IDR plus a processing fee. You must apply at an immigration office (Kantor Imigrasi) before your initial 30 days expire. The process takes a few days, so start early.
You'll be fined 1,000,000 IDR (about €60) per day of overstay, paid at the airport immigration office before departure. For overstays longer than 60 days, you may face deportation and a ban.
Yes, you must have a confirmed return or onward ticket within 30 days. Airlines check this before boarding, and immigration can ask to see it. A screenshot or printed copy is fine.
Yes, VoA is available at all major international airports: Jakarta (CGK), Bali (DPS), Surabaya (SUB), Medan (KNO), Makassar (UPG), and others. It's also available at some seaports. Check the official Indonesian immigration website for the full list.
It's not mandatory for the VoA, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Indonesia can be high — a hospital stay for dengue fever can cost hundreds of euros per day. Get a policy that covers medical evacuation.
Yes, you need to complete an electronic customs declaration (e-CD) within 3 days before arrival. It's quick and free. You can do it online or at a kiosk in the airport. No other pre-arrival forms are required for the VoA.
