Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Macau. Airlines and immigration officers check this at check-in and arrival.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Macau
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Macau ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have your hotel reservation or host's address handy. Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a booking.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Carry enough cash or a credit card to cover your expenses. Immigration may ask to see proof of funds, though it's not always checked.Recommended
No visa needed — but don't skip the return ticket
Italian passport holders get 90 days visa-free, but immigration often asks for proof of onward travel. Have a screenshot of your return flight or ferry ticket ready on your phone.
Overstaying is expensive
Overstaying even one day can result in a fine of 500 MOP per day and a ban from re-entering Macau for up to 1 year. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Macau International Airport or ferry terminal
You'll go through immigration at the airport (MFM) or at the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal if coming from Hong Kong. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The queue usually moves fast — 10-20 minutes.
2
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your validity, stamp you in, and hand it back. No forms to fill, no fee to pay. You'll get a 90-day stay permit.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel and walk through customs. Green channel if you have nothing to declare. Done.
