Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay in Finland
Your Japanese passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Finland. Finland does not require 6 months of validity beyond departure, but some airlines may still ask for it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for Schengen entry
Immigration at Helsinki Airport will ask for proof of onward travel — a return flight to Japan or a ticket to a third country. Have a printed or digital copy ready. This applies to all Schengen entries.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host ready. Border officers ask for it often, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement or enough cash/card to cover your stay — roughly €50–€100 per day. Officers rarely check it for Japanese passport holders, but they can ask.Recommended
Schengen area rules apply
Your 90-day visa-free stay covers all 27 Schengen countries. If you've already spent time in France or Italy earlier this year, those days count toward your 90-day limit. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Entry is straightforward
Japanese passport holders have one of the easiest entry processes to Finland. No visa, no forms, no fees. Just show your passport and you're in. The border officers are professional and efficient.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Helsinki Airport (HEL) or other border
You'll go through passport control. Join the queue for non-EU/EEA passports. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport, stamp it, and wave you through. Usually takes 2-5 minutes.
2
Show your accommodation and onward ticket if asked
The officer may ask where you're staying and when you're leaving. Have your hotel booking and return ticket easily accessible on your phone. Answer clearly and confidently.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. Use the green channel if you have nothing to declare. You're in Finland.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen area — your days in France, Germany, etc. all count toward the same 90-day limit.
No. The visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit or a national visa (D visa) before your 90 days are up.
No. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a permit), you must register with the local Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV).
You must have a valid passport for the entire duration of your stay. If it expires, you'll need to contact the Japanese embassy in Helsinki to get an emergency travel document before you can leave.
Technically, the visa-free regime does not permit any work, including remote work for a foreign employer. In practice, short-term remote work is usually tolerated, but if you're planning to stay for weeks and work full-time, consider applying for a digital nomad visa (Finland offers one for non-EU citizens).
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 3 years, and deportation. The Finnish Border Guard tracks entries and exits carefully. Don't risk it.
No. If you're transiting through Helsinki Airport and staying airside (not passing through passport control), you don't need a visa. But if you need to leave the airport or your layover is overnight, you'll need to enter Finland visa-free (which you can do as a Japanese passport holder).
