Kenyan passport holders must obtain a visa before traveling to Australia. There is no visa-on-arrival option, so you need to apply and receive approval before your departure. Processing can take several weeks, so plan ahead and submit your application well in advance.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa (Subclass 600 Visitor)You cannot board a flight to Australia without an approved visa.
Apply online before travel
Kenyan citizens must obtain an Australian Visitor visa (Subclass 600) before departure. Apply through the Australian Department of Home Affairs online portal. Processing times vary, so apply well in advance.Required
Passport validityCheck your passport expiry date — if it's less than 6 months away, renew it before applying for the visa.
At least 6 months remaining
Your Kenyan passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your intended date of arrival in Australia.Required
Blank passport pagesMake sure there's a clean, unused page in your passport for immigration to stamp.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for the entry stamp upon arrival in Australia.Required
Return or onward ticketHave your flight itinerary ready — you may need to show it to border officials.
Proof of departure
You must hold a confirmed return or onward airline ticket showing departure from Australia before your visa expires. Immigration may ask to see it on arrival.Required
Proof of sufficient fundsImmigration officers may ask how you'll support yourself during your visit.
For your stay
You should be able to show evidence of sufficient funds to cover your accommodation, living expenses, and return travel for the duration of your stay in Australia. This could be bank statements, payslips, or a sponsor's letter.Required
Health and character requirementsBe prepared to complete health checks and get a police certificate if requested.
Visa condition
As part of the visa application, you may need to undergo a medical examination and provide a police clearance certificate from Kenya. This is standard for visitor visas.Required
Travel insuranceMedical costs in Australia can be very high — insurance protects you financially.
Recommended
While not mandatory, comprehensive travel insurance covering medical expenses, trip cancellation, and theft is strongly recommended for your stay in Australia.Recommended
Arrival declarationYou don't need to fill out any extra forms before you fly — just the usual arrival card.
Not required
Australia does not require a separate arrival declaration for Kenyan passport holders. You will complete the standard Incoming Passenger Card on the plane or via the Australian Border Force app.Not required
No visa-on-arrival — don't risk it
Kenyan citizens cannot get an Australian visa on arrival. Attempting to board without a valid visa will result in being denied boarding by the airline. Always secure your visa before booking flights.
Apply early — processing can be slow
Visa processing for Kenyan applicants can take up to 6 weeks, and sometimes longer if additional checks are needed. Apply at least 2–3 months before your intended travel date to avoid disappointment.
Overstaying is a serious offence
Australian visas are not extendable. Overstaying even by a few days can lead to detention, a re-entry ban, and difficulties with future visa applications. Always leave before your visa expires.

What happens at the border

1
Determine your visa type
Visit the Australian Department of Home Affairs website (homeaffairs.gov.au) and use the Visa Finder tool to identify the correct visa for your purpose — tourist (subclass 600), business (subclass 600), student (subclass 500), etc. Each has different requirements and fees.
2
Gather your documents
Prepare your passport (valid 6+ months), a digital photo, proof of funds, travel itinerary, and any supporting documents specific to your visa type. For tourist visas, you'll also need a cover letter explaining your travel plans.
3
Apply online or via the High Commission
Most applicants apply online through ImmiAccount (online.immi.gov.au). You'll create an account, fill out the application, upload documents, and pay the fee (starting around AUD 190 for a tourist visa). Alternatively, you can lodge a paper application at the Australian High Commission in Nairobi (Riverside Drive, Nairobi).
4
Wait for processing
Processing times vary — for Kenyan applicants, tourist visas can take 2–6 weeks. You can track your application status online. You may be asked for additional information or an interview.
5
Receive your visa grant
Once approved, you'll receive a visa grant notification via email. The visa is linked electronically to your passport number. Check the visa conditions (e.g., no work, max stay) and ensure your details are correct.
6
Travel to Australia
At the airport, present your passport at check-in — the airline will verify your visa electronically. On arrival in Australia, go through immigration, where an officer may ask about your stay. Have your return ticket and proof of funds ready.

The base fee for a visitor visa (subclass 600) is AUD 190 (about KES 16,000 as of 2026). Other visa types cost more — student visas are around AUD 710. Fees are non-refundable, even if your visa is refused.

You should keep your passport valid for the duration of your stay. If it expires, contact your nearest Kenyan embassy or consulate in Australia to renew it. You'll also need to update your visa details with the Department of Home Affairs.
No, Australia does not require a yellow fever certificate for travellers from Kenya. However, you may need it if you've recently been in a yellow fever endemic country. Check the Department of Home Affairs website for the latest health requirements.
You'll receive a written refusal with reasons. You can appeal to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) within 21 days, but this can be costly and slow. Alternatively, you can reapply with new evidence. The application fee is not refunded.
