Kenyan passport holders need a visa to enter Germany. Apply at the German embassy in Nairobi before you travel — there are no visa-on-arrival or e-visa options for tourism or business. Processing takes 2–4 weeks, and you must submit your application in person.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply before travel
Apply at the German embassy or consulate in Kenya. Processing takes at least 15 calendar days — submit your application up to 6 months before your trip. You need a completed form, passport photos, travel insurance covering €30,000, and proof of accommodation and funds.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area
Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and have at least two blank pages. The 3-month validity rule applies to the entire Schengen zone — not just Germany.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at German airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing your departure from the Schengen area within the visa validity period.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a formal invitation letter from your host in Germany. Border officers may ask to see it during passport control.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have bank statements, traveller's cheques, or a sponsor letter showing at least €45 per day of your stay. Cash or credit card statements also work — officers want to see you won't need to work illegally.Recommended
Apply early — slots fill fast
Appointment slots at the German embassy in Nairobi are limited and often booked weeks in advance. Don't wait until the last minute. Start the process at least 6–8 weeks before your planned departure.
Visa-free travel is not an option
Kenyan passport holders cannot enter Germany without a visa — no visa waiver, no visa on arrival. The only exception is if you hold a valid Schengen visa from another country, which allows entry to Germany as long as it's still valid.

What happens at the border

1
Book your appointment
Go to the German embassy in Nairobi's online appointment system. Slots fill up fast, especially in summer — book 4–6 weeks ahead. You'll need to appear in person for biometrics (fingerprints and photo).
2
Prepare your documents
Gather all the requirements listed above. Make photocopies of everything — the embassy will keep them. Organize them in the order listed on the application form. Missing a single document can mean a wasted trip.
3
Attend the interview
Arrive at the embassy (Riverside Drive, Nairobi) 15 minutes early. Security will check your phone and bags. You'll submit your documents, answer a few questions about your trip, and pay the visa fee. The interview is usually short — 5–10 minutes.
4
Wait for processing
Standard processing takes 15 calendar days, but can stretch to 30–45 days during peak season. You'll get a call or email when your passport is ready for collection. Track it online if the embassy offers that.
5
Collect your passport
Pick up your passport from the embassy or a designated courier. Check the visa sticker carefully: name spelling, dates, and number of entries. If anything is wrong, tell them immediately.
6
Travel and enter Germany
At the airport in Germany, join the 'All Passports' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer confidently — they're checking you're a genuine tourist.
