Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR), Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), or Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ). Pay $50 USD in cash for a single-entry tourist visa valid up to 90 days. Have a passport photo ready — they don't always ask, but it speeds things up.Apply onlineRequired

Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Tanzania. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of a return or onward flight out of Tanzania. Have a printed or digital copy of your itinerary ready — they may check it before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Keep a copy of your hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient funds for stay
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing you can cover your stay. Immigration may ask to see proof of funds, especially if you're staying more than a few weeks.Recommended
Cash only — no cards accepted
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in US dollars cash. There are no ATMs before immigration. Bring $50–$100 in small bills ($10s and $20s). If you only have a $100 bill, the officer may not have change.
Yellow fever vaccine required if coming from Cambodia
Tanzania requires a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Cambodia is on that list. Get the vaccine at least 10 days before travel and carry the yellow card with your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration
At Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) or Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' after passport control. At land borders like Namanga or Sirari, go to the immigration office window marked 'Visa Issuance'.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll be handed a small form asking for basic info: name, passport number, flight details, hotel address. Fill it in while queuing — use a pen.
3
Submit documents and pay
Hand over your passport, completed form, passport photo, and $50 USD. The officer will process your visa and take your photo if needed. Payment is cash only — no cards.
4
Receive your visa sticker
The visa is a sticker placed in your passport. Check that the dates and your name are correct before walking away. It usually takes 5–10 minutes.
5
Proceed to passport control
After getting your visa, join the passport control queue. They'll stamp you in. Keep your boarding pass handy — they sometimes ask for it.
