Active conflict — commercial flights suspended
Iran is currently in an active military conflict with the US (escalated July 2026, strikes near Tehran and Semnan province). Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport has suspended all scheduled commercial flights, and aviation authorities (EASA) advise against operating in Iranian airspace at all. Do not plan travel to Iran right now — check your government's official travel advisory and live flight status before making any arrangements. The visa information on this page describes the standard peacetime policy and may not be practically usable at the moment.
Passport validity is non-negotiable
Iran requires 6 months of passport validity from your arrival date. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding by the airline and entry by Iranian immigration — no exceptions.
Women must wear a headscarf in Iran
All female visitors, regardless of nationality, must cover their hair with a headscarf in public. This is strictly enforced, so pack accordingly.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the e-visa online
Go to evisa.mfa.ir, create an account, fill in your personal details, upload your passport scan and photo, and pay the fee (around €30–€50 depending on nationality). Submit at least 2 weeks before your trip.
2
Receive your e-visa approval
Once approved (usually within 3–7 working days), you'll get a PDF with a visa reference number. Print it and keep it with your travel documents.
3
Arrive at an Iranian airport
At Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in Tehran or other international airports, go to the 'Visa on Arrival' desk if you haven't already received a stamp. Show your passport, printed e-visa approval, and your return ticket. The officer will stamp your passport and let you through.
4
Register your stay
Within 8 days of arrival, you must register your address with the local police (or your hotel will do it for you). This is a legal requirement for all foreign visitors.
