Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your entry date into Malaysia. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Malaysia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket within 30 days. Budget airlines at KLIA and Langkawi are strict about this — carry a printed or digital copy.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Officers rarely ask, but if you cannot show where you are staying, they can deny entry.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient cash or bank statement
Carry at least 500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing available funds. Immigration may ask to see proof you can support yourself during your stay.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines and immigration will check that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. If it's close, renew before you fly. No exceptions.
Keep your disembarkation card stub
When you enter Malaysia, you'll receive a small card stub (the 'arrival card' portion). Keep it with your passport — you'll need to hand it back when you leave.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Malaysian immigration
You'll go through immigration at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Penang, Langkawi, or any other entry point. Join the 'Foreign Passport' queue.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and boarding pass. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel booking. Answer questions clearly (purpose of visit, length of stay).
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day entry permit. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the date is correct. You'll also get a small disembarkation card stub; keep it with your passport.
4
Exit immigration and collect luggage
After clearing immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items.
