Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Egypt. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Cairo and Hurghada airports ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Egypt. Immigration may ask where you are staying — having the address and contact number saves time.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have bank statements or cash equivalent to at least $1,000 USD available. Officers rarely ask, but if they do, you need to show you can pay for accommodation and expenses.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity at check-in. If it has less than 6 months remaining from your entry date, you will be denied boarding — no exceptions.
eVisa is the only option for tourists
Sri Lankan passport holders cannot get a visa on arrival. Apply online at visa2egypt.gov.eg at least a week before travel. Single-entry costs $25 USD, multiple-entry costs $60 USD.
Transit without visa is possible
If you're staying airside and not passing through immigration, you can transit for up to 48 hours without a visa. Holders of valid US, UK, or Schengen visas can transit for up to 72 hours.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for your eVisa
Go to visa2egypt.gov.eg and fill out the online application. Upload a scanned copy of your passport bio page and a passport-sized photo. Pay the fee with a credit or debit card. You'll receive the approved visa by email as a PDF. Print it out and keep a copy on your phone.
2
Prepare your documents
Before heading to the airport, gather your passport (with 6+ months validity), printed eVisa, return flight confirmation, and hotel booking. Put them in a folder you can grab quickly.
3
Arrive at Cairo or Hurghada airport
At immigration, join the queue for foreign passport holders. Hand over your passport and eVisa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Answer clearly. The process usually takes 5–10 minutes. You'll get a stamp in your passport — check the allowed stay duration.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall where taxis and ride-shares are available.
