Sri Lankan passport holders need a visa to enter South Africa. You must apply before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival. Processing can take several weeks, so plan ahead.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover your full stay
At least 6 months validity beyond your entry date. Minimum 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Airlines may deny boarding if validity is too close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Officers check this regularly
A confirmed flight out of the country. Immigration may ask to see this — have a screenshot ready on your phone. An onward ticket from a neighbouring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel name or address
A hotel booking confirmation, or the address of where you are staying. The arrival form often asks for this. A Booking.com or Airbnb confirmation email is fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Rarely checked
Immigration officers may ask you to demonstrate sufficient funds for your stay. A credit card or bank statement usually suffices.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take 2–3 weeks or longer. Do not book flights or accommodation until you have the visa in hand. Last-minute applications are risky.
Keep copies of everything
Make photocopies of your passport data page, visa sticker, flight itinerary, and hotel booking. Keep them separate from the originals. If your passport is lost or stolen, copies make replacement much faster.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a visa at the South African High Commission or VFS centre
Submit your visa application in person at the South African High Commission in Colombo or through the designated VFS Global centre. Book an appointment online first. Bring all required documents: passport, photos, flight itinerary, hotel booking, bank statements, and visa fee. Processing takes 10–15 working days, sometimes longer.
2
Wait for visa approval
Once submitted, the embassy processes your application. You may be asked for additional documents or an interview. Track your application online using the reference number provided. Do not book non-refundable flights until you have the visa in hand.
3
Travel to South Africa
When you arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) or Cape Town International Airport, go to the immigration counter for foreign passport holders. Have your passport with the visa sticker, return ticket, and proof of accommodation ready. The officer may ask about your plans and funds. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Receive entry stamp and stay duration
The immigration officer will stamp your passport with the number of days you're allowed to stay — usually matching your visa validity. Check the stamp before leaving the counter. If it's wrong, ask the officer to correct it immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Processing usually takes 10–15 working days, but can take longer during peak seasons. Apply at least 3–4 weeks before your planned travel date.
Yes, but it's not automatic. You must apply at a VFS centre in South Africa before your current visa expires. Extensions are granted at the discretion of immigration and usually cost around ZAR 425 (about $23). You'll need a valid reason, like medical treatment or a family emergency.
Your visa application will be rejected. You must renew your passport first. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
Only if you are travelling from or through a country with yellow fever risk. Sri Lanka is not a yellow fever country, so you don't need it unless you transit through an affected country. Check the latest requirements before you go.
No. South Africa does not offer eVisas for Sri Lankan passport holders. You must apply in person at the South African High Commission in Colombo or through a VFS Global centre.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, banned from re-entering South Africa for a period, or both. The fine is around ZAR 2,000–5,000 (about $110–$280). Always leave before your visa expires.
Immigration officers can ask for proof of sufficient funds. Have recent bank statements or a credit card statement ready. There's no fixed minimum, but showing you have at least $50 per day of your stay is a safe guideline.
