Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Japan does not require 6 months of passport validity beyond your departure date — just needs to be valid for the entire stay. Airlines sometimes enforce the 6-month rule anyway, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound flight required
Immigration officers ask for a return or onward ticket at arrival. Enforcement varies by officer — some check strictly, others skip it. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound booking ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host address
Immigration may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation email or a friend's address and phone number in Japan works. Keep it accessible on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers rarely ask, but having a bank statement or credit card showing available funds (roughly ¥100,000 per week) covers you if they do. Cash or card — either works.Recommended

No extension possible
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you overstay, you risk fines, detention, and a ban from re-entering Japan. Plan your departure date carefully.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before flying
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Optionally register on Visit Japan Web (vjw-lp.digital.go.jp) to speed up arrival.
2
Arrive at a Japanese airport
At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, or other international airports, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport and (if registered) the Visit Japan Web QR code ready. If not registered, fill out the paper disembarkation card on the plane.
3
Go through immigration
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit and length of stay. They might ask to see your return ticket or hotel booking. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport with a 90-day visa-free entry.
4
Collect luggage and clear customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. If you have restricted items (e.g., large amounts of cash, certain foods), use the red channel.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is non-extendable. You must leave Japan before the 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines, detention, or a ban from re-entering Japan.
You cannot extend the visa-free stay. For longer visits (e.g., work, study, long-term tourism), you need to apply for the appropriate visa at the Japanese embassy in Luxembourg before traveling. Tourist visas for longer stays are not available on arrival.
No. If you're transiting through a Japanese airport and staying airside (not passing immigration), you don't need a visa. If you want to leave the airport during a layover, you can use the visa-free entry for up to 90 days, provided you meet the requirements.
You must have a passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. If it expires during your stay, you'll need to renew it at the Luxembourg embassy in Tokyo. In practice, immigration won't let you board your flight if your passport doesn't meet the 6-month rule.
No, it's optional. But it saves time at immigration — you skip the paper disembarkation card queue. Register at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp up to 2 weeks before your trip. You'll get a QR code to show on arrival.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and short visits. Remote work for a foreign employer is in a gray area. Many travelers do it, but strictly speaking, you're not allowed to 'work' in Japan without a work visa. If you're just checking emails and taking calls, it's usually fine — but don't set up a permanent office.
Denial is rare for Luxembourg passport holders with proper documents. Common reasons: insufficient passport validity, no return ticket, or suspicion of working illegally. If denied, you'll be put on the next flight back at your own expense. Always carry proof of onward travel and accommodation.
