Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Nepal. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket out of Nepal. A printed itinerary or e-ticket works. If you're overlanding to India, have a bus or train booking ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking
Have your first night's hotel or hostel booking confirmation ready. A printed copy or a screenshot on your phone works — they rarely ask, but it's a quick way to show your itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. ATMs are available in Kathmandu and Pokhara but unreliable in remote areas.Recommended
Cash is king at the visa counter
The visa on arrival counter does not accept credit or debit cards. Bring USD or EUR in cash (crisp, newer bills preferred). ATMs are available after immigration, but you'll need cash to get through.
Photo booth backup
If you forget a passport photo, don't panic. There are photo booths at the airport near the visa on arrival area. They cost about 200 NPR and take a few minutes.

What happens at the border

1
Fill Out the Arrival Card
On the plane or at the airport, grab a white arrival card. Fill in your passport details, flight number, and accommodation address. Keep it with your passport.
2
Go to the Visa on Arrival Counter
After deplaning at Tribhuvan International Airport, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival'. There are self-service kiosks where you enter your details, get a receipt, and pay the fee. If the kiosk line is long, use the manual counter.
3
Pay the Fee
Pay in cash (USD, EUR, or NPR). Credit cards are not accepted at the visa counter. Keep the receipt.
4
Queue for Immigration
Hand over your passport, arrival card, visa receipt, and photo. The officer will stamp your visa. This usually takes 2–5 minutes.
5
Collect Luggage and Exit
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel, then walk through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're in Nepal.
