Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Latvian passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Finland. As a Schengen area member, Finland does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date — just cover the dates you're there.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Helsinki-Vantaa routinely ask for a return ticket or proof of onward travel out of the Schengen zone. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines sometimes check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a signed letter from your host in Finland. Border officers rarely ask for it for Latvian passport holders, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
You don't need to show a specific amount, but have a bank statement or credit card ready. Officers may ask how you'll fund your trip — a quick answer and a card swipe usually suffices.Recommended
Schengen Area rules apply
Finland is part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day limit counts across all Schengen countries, not just Finland. If you've already spent time in France or Germany earlier in the year, that time counts toward your 90 days.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Helsinki-Vantaa or other entry point
You'll go through passport control. Join the queue for non-EU/EEA passports. Have your passport and boarding pass ready.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and accommodation. Answer clearly and briefly. If asked, show your return ticket and hotel booking.
3
Get your passport stamped
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp before walking away. That stamp sets your 90-day clock.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel for most travellers. You're in.

Frequently asked questions

You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen Area limit. The clock resets after 90 days outside the Schengen zone.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits. If you plan to work (even remote work for a non-Finnish company), you may need a permit. Short business trips are fine.
Yes. You still need proof of onward travel — a ferry booking, bus ticket, or train reservation out of Finland. Immigration wants to see you'll leave.
Renew it before you travel. Finnish border officers strictly enforce the 6-month validity rule. A passport with less than 6 months left may be denied entry.
Generally no for visa-free stays. Extensions are only granted in exceptional circumstances (e.g., medical emergency). You'd need to apply at the local police station before your 90 days expire.
If you stay longer than 90 days, yes. For short visits under 90 days, no registration is needed.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from the Schengen Area, and difficulties getting visas in the future. Leave before your 90 days are up.
