Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply at the official Vietnam eVisa portal at evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn. The fee is $25 USD for single or multiple entry, valid for up to 90 days. Processing takes 3 working days, so apply at least a week before your flight.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your entry date into Vietnam. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration at Noi Bai or Tan Son Nhat will deny boarding if it's close.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Vietnam
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Vietnam ready — they'll check it before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital hotel confirmation for your entire stay. If staying with friends, have their address and phone number written down — officers sometimes ask for it.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least $500 USD available. Officers rarely ask, but if you look underprepared they may request it.Recommended
eVisa only for tourism or short business
The eVisa is for tourism, visiting friends/family, or short business trips (meetings, conferences). For work, study, or long-term stays, you need a different visa type from a Vietnamese embassy.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Vietnam, not from your departure date. Double-check before applying.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Vietnamese eVisa portal (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn). Fill in your personal details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport data page. Pay the fee ($25 USD) by credit card. Processing takes 3–5 business days. You'll receive an approval letter by email.
2
Print the eVisa approval letter
Print the eVisa approval letter you receive by email. Keep a digital copy on your phone as backup. You'll need to show it at check-in and on arrival.
3
Arrive at the airport in Vietnam
At any international airport in Vietnam (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, etc.), proceed to the immigration queue. Have your passport, printed eVisa, and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp you in — usually takes 1–2 minutes.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After clearing immigration, collect your checked luggage from the carousel. Then proceed through customs (green channel if nothing to declare). You're free to go.
