Active conflict — commercial flights suspended
Iran is currently in an active military conflict with the US (escalated July 2026, strikes near Tehran and Semnan province). Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport has suspended all scheduled commercial flights, and aviation authorities (EASA) advise against operating in Iranian airspace at all. Do not plan travel to Iran right now — check your government's official travel advisory and live flight status before making any arrangements. The visa information on this page describes the standard peacetime policy and may not be practically usable at the moment.
Apply early — don't wait
The e-visa can take up to 2 weeks to process. Last-minute applications risk missing your flight. Start the process as soon as you book your trip.
No visa on arrival for Libyan passport holders
Libyan citizens are not eligible for visa on arrival in Iran. You must have the e-visa approved before you travel. Don't rely on getting a visa at the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for an eVisa online
Go to the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs eVisa website and fill out the application form. Upload your passport photo and scan of your passport bio page. Pay the visa fee online. Processing typically takes 7-10 working days, but start at least 3 weeks before your trip to be safe.
2
Receive your eVisa approval code
Once approved, you'll get a visa authorization code via email. Print this code and keep it with your travel documents. You'll need it when you arrive in Iran.
3
Arrive at an Iranian airport
When you land at Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) in Tehran or other international airports, go to the visa-on-arrival desk if you haven't already gotten a stamp. Present your passport, the eVisa code, and your return ticket. Pay the visa fee in cash (USD or EUR) if you're getting a visa on arrival. You'll be fingerprinted and photographed.
4
Pass through immigration
After getting your visa stamp, proceed to passport control. The officer will check your documents and may ask about your itinerary. Answer clearly and have your hotel address ready. Then collect your bags and you're in.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, Libyan passport holders are eligible for a visa on arrival at Iranian international airports. However, it's not guaranteed — you must have a confirmed return ticket, a hotel booking, and enough cash to pay the fee. The eVisa is safer because you get approval before you travel.
The visa fee varies by nationality and is set by the Iranian government. For Libyan citizens, expect to pay around €50–€80 (or equivalent in USD) for a single-entry tourist visa. You'll pay this when you apply for the eVisa or at the airport for visa on arrival. Always carry extra cash in case the fee changes.
The visa allows a maximum stay of 30 days. It is not extendable, so if you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave and re-enter or apply for a different visa type before you travel.
No. The eVisa is a pre-approved visa you get online before you travel. The visa on arrival is issued at the airport when you land. With the eVisa, you skip the uncertainty of being denied at the border. Both allow a 30-day stay.
Visa on arrival is only available at major international airports like Tehran (IKA), Shiraz, Isfahan, Mashhad, and Tabriz. If you arrive by land or at a smaller airport, you must have a visa issued in advance — the eVisa is your best bet.
For most nationalities, including Libyan, you don't need a formal sponsor. The eVisa application asks for your hotel details and basic travel info. Some nationalities are required to go through a travel agency, but Libyan citizens can apply directly.
No. Iranian banks are not connected to international banking systems, so your credit or debit card won't work in Iran. You must pay the visa fee in cash — US dollars or euros are preferred. Bring crisp, new bills.
