Active conflict — commercial flights suspended
Iran is currently in an active military conflict with the US (escalated July 2026, strikes near Tehran and Semnan province). Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport has suspended all scheduled commercial flights, and aviation authorities (EASA) advise against operating in Iranian airspace at all. Do not plan travel to Iran right now — check your government's official travel advisory and live flight status before making any arrangements. The visa information on this page describes the standard peacetime policy and may not be practically usable at the moment.
Apply Early
The e-visa process can take up to 3 weeks. Don't leave it to the last minute — apply at least a month before your planned departure to avoid stress.
Currency and Local Time
Iran uses the Iranian rial (IRR) and is on UTC+3:30. Be prepared for cash-only transactions in many places, and note that the local time is 3.5 hours ahead of UTC.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport
Fly into one of the major international airports in Iran — Tehran Imam Khomeini (IKA) is the most common. On arrival, follow the signs for 'Visa on Arrival' (usually before passport control).
2
Fill out the visa application form
At the visa on arrival desk, you'll get a form to fill out. Have your passport, photos, and accommodation details ready. The form is straightforward — name, passport number, address in Iran, etc.
3
Pay the visa fee
Pay the fee in cash (euros, US dollars, or rials). Keep the receipt — you'll need it to get your visa sticker.
4
Get your visa sticker and enter
After payment, the officer will issue a visa sticker in your passport. Then proceed to passport control, where they'll stamp you in. The whole process usually takes 20-40 minutes, depending on the queue.

Exceptions & conditions
  • Passengers with confirmed onward tickets and no need to clear immigration may stay airside up to 24 hours without a visa.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa on arrival is only available at international airports. If you're entering by land from Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, or Armenia, you need to apply for an e-visa in advance through the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. The e-visa takes about 7-10 working days to process.
The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days. It's not extendable, so if you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before you travel.
Yes, as of 2026, Moroccan citizens are eligible for the visa on arrival at Iranian airports. However, immigration officers have the final say, so make sure you have all the required documents to avoid any issues.
You need to provide an address where you'll be staying. If you're staying with friends or family, have them write a simple letter with their full address and phone number. If you're planning to travel around, book a hotel for the first night — that's usually enough.
No, the visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash. Euros and US dollars are accepted, and sometimes British pounds. Iranian rials are also accepted, but you'll get a better rate if you pay in foreign currency. Make sure you have the exact amount or small bills.
If you're staying in the airport and not passing through immigration, you don't need a visa. But if you want to leave the airport, you'll need the visa on arrival or an e-visa. The same rules apply as for a regular visit.
You'll likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Iranian immigration. It's a strict rule — don't risk it. Renew your passport before you travel.
