Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa at Maputo International Airport (MPM) or other land borders. Pay $50 USD in cash (exact change) for a single-entry tourist visa valid for 30 days. Have two passport-sized photos ready — the photo booth at the airport charges triple.Check visa detailsRequired
Valid passport
Must have 6 months validity beyond your intended stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from your date of entry. Airlines at Casablanca and Marrakech will deny boarding if you're under 5 months — I've seen it happen. Bring a photocopy of the bio page too.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mozambique
Immigration officers at Maputo airport routinely ask for a printed or digital onward ticket. If you're overlanding to South Africa or Eswatini, show a bus ticket or border crossing plan. Budget airlines like FlySafair check this before letting you board.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have your first night's hotel confirmation ready — they ask for it at the visa-on-arrival counter. A printed booking works better than a phone screen if the airport WiFi is down (which it often is).Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry at least $500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing equivalent funds. The officer may ask to see it if you're staying more than a week. ATMs in Maputo dispense meticais but run out of cash on weekends.Recommended
Cash only at visa counter
The visa on arrival fee must be paid in cash — no cards, no mobile payments. Bring $50 USD in crisp bills (or metical equivalent). ATMs are available after immigration, but you'll need cash before that.
30-day stay, not extendable
The visa on arrival gives you exactly 30 days. It cannot be extended. If you need more time, you'll have to leave and re-enter, or apply for a different visa type before your trip.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Maputo International Airport (MPM)
After deplaning, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Visa on Arrival'. There's a dedicated counter before the main passport control. Join the queue, present your passport, return ticket, and accommodation booking. Pay the fee in cash. You'll get a visa sticker in your passport, then proceed to passport control.
2
At land borders (e.g., Ressano Garcia)
Same process: find the visa on arrival window, pay cash, get the sticker. Land borders can be slower — expect 30–60 minutes. Keep your passport and cash handy.
3
After receiving the visa
Proceed to passport control. The officer will stamp you in. Your 30-day stay starts from that day. Keep the visa receipt (if given) with your passport.
