Madagascan passport holders need a visa to enter the United Kingdom. You must apply for a Standard Visitor visa before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa option for your nationality. Plan ahead, as the application process involves an online form, an appointment at a visa application centre, and a decision that can take several weeks.

No eVisa option for Madagascan citizens
Despite the UK having an eVisa system for some nationalities, Madagascan passport holders are not eligible. You must apply through the standard visa application process at the embassy/consulate or visa application centre. Do not use unofficial websites that claim to offer eVisas — they are scams.
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take up to 6 weeks, and biometric appointments may be limited. Apply at least 2-3 months before your planned travel date to avoid disappointment. Peak periods (May-August) can be busier.
TB test is mandatory
If you've been in Madagascar for more than 6 months, you must have a TB test at an approved clinic. Without the certificate, your visa will be automatically refused. The test costs around 200,000 Ariary and takes a few days for results.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to GOV.UK and fill out the Standard Visitor visa application. Have your passport, travel dates, and address in the UK ready. You'll need to create an account and answer questions about your background and travel plans.
2
Pay the fee and book biometrics
After submitting the form, pay the £115 fee online. Then book your appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Antananarivo. Appointments are usually available within a few weeks, but can fill up fast during peak seasons.
3
Attend the biometric appointment
Bring your printed application form, your passport, and your appointment confirmation. At the centre, you'll give fingerprints and a photo. You'll also submit your supporting documents — they'll be scanned and returned to you.
4
Wait for the decision
Processing times vary. Standard visitor visas from Madagascar typically take 3 to 6 weeks, but can be longer. You can track your application online using your reference number. You'll be notified by email when a decision is made.
5
Collect your passport and travel
Once approved, you'll receive your passport with the visa vignette (sticker) inside. Check the dates and details carefully. When you arrive in the UK, go through the 'Non-EU' queue at border control and present your passport. The Border Force officer may ask questions about your visit.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing usually takes 3 to 6 weeks, but it can be longer during peak seasons (summer and Christmas). You can pay for priority processing (5 working days) or super priority (next day) if available, but these services cost extra and are not always offered at the Antananarivo centre. Check the VFS Global website for current options.
No. You must attend a biometric appointment in person to provide fingerprints and a photo. The only way to avoid this is if you've had your biometrics taken for a UK visa in the last 5 years and are applying for a new visa — but even then, you'll likely need to attend an appointment to submit your passport. There is no fully online process for Madagascan citizens.
The Standard Visitor visa allows you to stay in the UK for up to 6 months. You cannot work, study for more than 30 days, or access public funds. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a different visa type.
Yes, if you have been living in Madagascar for more than 6 months. You must get a chest X-ray and sputum test at an approved clinic (the UK government lists approved clinics in Madagascar). The certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of the test, and you must submit it with your visa application.
No. Standard Visitor visas are not extendable. You must leave the UK before your visa expires. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa category from outside the UK, such as a work or study visa.
You'll receive a refusal letter explaining the reasons. You can reapply, but you'll need to address the reasons for refusal (e.g., provide more financial evidence). The application fee is not refunded. There is no formal appeal for visitor visa refusals, but you can request an administrative review in some cases — check the refusal letter for details.
Yes, it's strongly recommended. The visa officer wants to see that you have a place to stay and that you intend to leave. Provide hotel bookings or an invitation letter from your host, and a copy of your return flight itinerary (but don't book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved).
