Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from your date of entry into Sri Lanka. Airlines check this before boarding — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Sri Lanka
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return flight. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they may deny entry if you cannot show one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry at least $50 USD per day in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Immigration rarely checks this, but it is better to have it ready.Recommended
Cash Only at Visa on Arrival Counter
The visa fee must be paid in USD cash. There are ATMs before immigration, but they may not dispense USD. Bring crisp, undamaged USD bills to avoid issues.
e-Visa Option Available
If you prefer to skip the queue and pay online, apply for an e-Visa at least 3 business days before travel. It costs about USD 35 and is accepted at all entry points, including land borders.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the Visa on Arrival Counter
After landing at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo, follow signs to the Visa on Arrival counter before immigration. There are separate queues for visa on arrival and e-Visa holders.
2
Fill Out the Application Form
Collect a visa application form at the counter. Fill it in with your passport details, flight info, and accommodation address. Keep it simple and legible.
3
Submit Documents and Pay the Fee
Hand over your passport, completed form, return ticket (screenshot or print), and accommodation confirmation. Pay the visa fee in USD (cash only) — USD 40 for 30 days single entry. Credit cards are not accepted.
4
Wait for Processing
Processing takes about 10–15 minutes. The officer will stamp your passport with the visa. Check the validity dates before walking away.
5
Proceed to Immigration
With the visa stamp, go to the immigration queue. Present your passport and boarding pass. The officer may ask a few questions about your stay. Answer honestly.
6
Collect Luggage and Exit
After immigration, collect your checked luggage from the carousel, then proceed through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel.
