Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa on arrival
Visa on arrival
Get your visa on arrival at Maputo International Airport and other land borders. Have 50 USD in cash ready for the single-entry visa fee (30 days). The immigration officer will take your passport, stamp the visa, and hand it back — the whole process takes 5–10 minutes.Apply onlineRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your date of entry into Mozambique. Airlines at Yangon International Airport will check this before letting you board — no exceptions.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mozambique
Immigration at Maputo Airport asks for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Budget airlines like Ethiopian Airlines or Qatar Airways will check this at check-in — have a printed copy or the booking confirmation on your phone.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host ready. Immigration officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you're arriving without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry at least 500 USD in cash or have a bank statement showing sufficient funds. Immigration rarely checks this for short visits, but it's safer to have it ready.Recommended
Cash is king at immigration
The visa-on-arrival counter only accepts cash — no cards, no mobile payments. Bring crisp USD bills (no older than 2009, no tears or marks). ATMs at Maputo airport are notoriously unreliable for foreign cards. Carry at least $100 USD to cover the visa and a taxi into town.
Yellow fever certificate required
If you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (including Myanmar), you must show a valid yellow fever certificate. Without it, you may be vaccinated at the airport or denied entry. Get the shot at least 10 days before you travel and keep the yellow card with your passport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at immigration counter
At Maputo International Airport (MPM) or other entry points, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. Join the queue — it can take 30-60 minutes during peak hours.
2
Submit documents and pay fee
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card (given on the plane or at the counter), and photo if you have one. Tell the officer you need a visa on arrival. Pay the fee in USD cash — they'll give you a receipt.
3
Wait for visa processing
The officer will process your visa, stamp your passport, and return it. This usually takes 5-10 minutes. Check the stamp for correct dates before walking away.
4
Proceed to baggage claim
Once you have your stamped passport, head to baggage claim and customs. Keep your passport handy — there may be a secondary check at the exit.
