Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply for India eVisa
Apply at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 days before travel. Fees range from $25 to $80 USD depending on the visa type (tourist, business, medical). Approval usually comes within 72 hours — print the approval letter and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must have at least 6 months validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of arrival in India. Carry a photocopy of the bio-data page separately in case the original is held at immigration.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Indian airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready — they may deny boarding without it.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Hotel bookings or a letter of invitation from your host in India can speed up immigration. Officers rarely demand it, but having it avoids delays if asked.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry evidence of sufficient funds for your stay — a bank statement or credit card limit showing at least $300 USD equivalent per person per week. Officers rarely check, but it helps if you look under-budgeted.Recommended
eVisa is not extendable
You cannot extend your eVisa once in India. If you need to stay longer, you must leave the country and apply for a new eVisa.
Apply early
eVisa processing takes 3-5 business days. Don't wait until the last minute — apply at least a week before your departure.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa Online
Go to the official Indian eVisa website (indianvisaonline.gov.in). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $25-$80 depending on duration). You'll receive a confirmation email within 3-5 business days.
2
Print or Save eVisa Approval
Once approved, you'll get an email with your eVisa attached. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and at immigration.
3
Arrive at Indian Immigration
At the airport, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' or 'eVisas'. Hand over your passport and eVisa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. They'll stamp your passport and let you through.
