Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Tajikistan. Airlines at check-in may ask to see your passport validity, so carry a printed copy of your itinerary just in case.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tajikistan
Immigration officers at Dushanbe International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a digital version ready on your phone.Recommended

Border officials may request a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from a host in Tajikistan. Keep a printed confirmation or a digital copy accessible.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Carry enough cash (US dollars or euros are widely accepted) or a credit card to cover your expenses. Immigration may ask to see proof of funds, especially if you're staying for more than a few days.Recommended
Visa-free entry is straightforward
Mongolian passport holders enjoy visa-free access to Tajikistan for up to 30 days. No application, no fee, no paperwork before arrival. Just show up with a valid passport and a return ticket.
Overstaying is costly
Overstaying even by a day can result in fines and potential entry bans. Set a reminder to leave before day 30. Extensions are not available for visa-free entries.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Dushanbe International Airport
Most Mongolian travelers fly into Dushanbe International Airport (DYU). After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Tajik citizens and foreigners — join the foreigner queue.
2
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport with the photo page facing up. The officer will check your passport validity and may ask for your return ticket or accommodation details. Answer clearly and briefly.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with a 30-day visa-free entry. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the date is correct. If you need more than 30 days, ask about extension options at the counter (though extensions are not guaranteed).
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There's usually a green channel for nothing to declare and a red channel for goods over the duty-free limit. Walk through green unless you have something to declare.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave Tajikistan within 30 days. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a visa at a Tajik embassy before traveling, or leave and re-enter (though this is not guaranteed to reset the clock).
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll likely face a fine (around 200-400 TJS per day overstayed, roughly $20-40 USD) and could be detained until you pay. In some cases, you may be banned from re-entering for a period. Always leave on time.
For stays under 30 days, no registration is required. If you somehow obtained a longer stay (e.g., via a visa), registration with the Ministry of Internal Affairs within 3 days of arrival is mandatory. But for standard visa-free visits, you're fine.
Yes, the visa-free policy applies at all land border crossings, not just airports. Common entry points include the border with Uzbekistan (e.g., Oybek/Fotehobod crossing) and Kyrgyzstan (e.g., Karamyk crossing). The same 30-day limit applies.
You will be denied entry. Tajikistan strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. Renew your passport before traveling. No exceptions are made at the border.
No, there is no visa on arrival for Mongolian passport holders. The only option is visa-free for up to 30 days. For longer stays, you must obtain a visa from a Tajik embassy or consulate before departure.
No mandatory vaccinations are required for entry. However, the CDC and WHO recommend routine vaccines (MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella, polio, flu) and consider hepatitis A, typhoid, and rabies vaccines depending on your itinerary. No yellow fever vaccine is required unless you're arriving from an endemic country.
