Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Vietnam eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply at the official Vietnam eVisa portal at evisa.xuatnhhcanh.gov.vn. The fee is $25 USD for single entry or $50 USD for multiple entry, valid for up to 90 days. Processing takes 3 working days — do not book flights until you receive the approval letter.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your Maltese passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Vietnam. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Vietnam
Immigration officers at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Vietnam ready — they will check the date matches your eVisa validity.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host in Vietnam. Immigration may ask where you are staying — having the address and booking reference speeds things up.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Officers rarely ask, but have a bank statement showing at least $500 USD or equivalent in cash. If you look under-prepared, they can deny entry — better to have it in your bag.Recommended
Visa-free entry is 15 days only
If you plan to stay longer than 15 days, you must apply for an eVisa before you travel. The 15-day period starts from the day you enter Vietnam.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Vietnam, not from your departure date. Check your passport now.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Vietnamese airport
You'll land at one of Vietnam's international airports (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, etc.). Follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'.
2
Queue at immigration counter
Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. If you have an eVisa, have the approval letter or printout handy.
3
Present documents to officer
Hand over your passport and any required documents. The officer will check your passport validity, blank page, and may ask for your return ticket or accommodation.
4
Get stamped in
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport and you're free to enter. Keep the stamp visible — you'll need it when leaving.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, collect your bags from baggage claim, then proceed through customs. No arrival declaration form is needed.
