Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for your entire stay in Finland
Your Mexican passport needs to be valid for the whole time you're in Finland. Finland does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but some airlines may still ask for it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Helsinki Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget carriers often check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a friend you're visiting ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Finland can ask for proof of sufficient funds — roughly €50 per day of your stay. A recent bank statement or credit card showing available credit usually satisfies the officer.Recommended
6-month passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date, you will be denied boarding. Renew your passport well in advance.
Schengen area rules apply
Finland is part of the Schengen area. Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen zone, not just Finland. Days spent in other Schengen countries count toward your 90-day limit.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Helsinki Airport (HEL)
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control' for non-EU citizens. Join the queue for 'All passports' or 'Non-EU'. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready. The officer will ask your purpose of visit and length of stay. They'll stamp your passport with the entry date.
2
Border check
The officer may ask to see your return ticket and accommodation booking. Answer clearly and confidently. They might also ask about your travel plans. If everything is in order, you'll be stamped in for up to 90 days.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim. Then walk through the green 'Nothing to declare' customs channel if you have no goods to declare. You're now in Finland.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. You cannot extend it from within Finland. For longer stays (work, study, family reunion), you need a national visa or residence permit, which must be applied for at the Finnish embassy in Mexico City before you travel.
No, if you stay in the international transit area and your connecting flight is within 24 hours, you don't need a visa. But if you need to clear immigration (e.g., to switch terminals or stay overnight), you'll need to meet the same visa-free entry requirements.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced. Renew your passport before traveling.
Yes, there are no internal border checks within the Schengen area. You can cross by road, rail, or ferry from Sweden or Norway without additional formalities. Just ensure your passport has been stamped on entry to the Schengen zone.
No, for stays under 90 days you don't need to register. If you stay longer than 90 days (with a residence permit), you must register with the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (DVV) within 90 days of arrival.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 3 years, and it can affect future visa applications. Leave before day 90.
Technically, the visa-free stay is for tourism and business meetings, not for remote work. However, short-term remote work (a few days) is usually tolerated. For longer remote work, consider Finland's digital nomad visa (if available) or a residence permit.
