Mexican passport holders need an eVisa to enter South Africa in 2026. The eVisa is a single-entry permit for tourism or business visits. Apply online before you travel — there's no visa-on-arrival option for Mexicans.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
South Africa eVisa
Apply for a South African eVisa at the Department of Home Affairs portal before you fly. Processing takes 5–10 business days, so apply at least 2 weeks ahead. The eVisa is single-entry and valid for 90 days from issue.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
6 months validity
Your Mexican passport must have at least 2 blank pages and be valid for 6 months beyond your intended departure from South Africa. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit
Immigration officers at OR Tambo, Cape Town, and King Shaka routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they will not let you through without one.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel or host booking
Have your hotel confirmation or host's address and contact details ready. Officers occasionally ask where you are staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement or enough cash/cards to cover your stay. Immigration may ask how you will support yourself — having a printed statement avoids delays.Recommended
Apply early — no visa on arrival
There is no visa-on-arrival for Mexican passport holders at South African airports. You must have an approved eVisa before you board your flight. Airlines check this before issuing a boarding pass.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in South Africa, not from your departure date. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before applying for the eVisa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official South African eVisa website (ehome.dha.gov.za). Fill in your personal details, upload a digital passport photo, and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around ZAR 1,350, about USD 75) by credit card. Processing takes 5–10 business days — apply at least 2 weeks before your trip.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
You'll get an email with a PDF attachment once approved. Print a copy and save it offline on your phone. The eVisa is linked to your passport number — you don't need to carry a separate document, but having a printout speeds things up.
3
Arrive at a South African airport
At OR Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, or King Shaka (Durban), follow signs to 'Foreign Passports.' Join the queue for non-SADC nationals. Have your passport, eVisa printout, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The officer will stamp your passport — that's your entry permit.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, pick up your bags from the carousel. There's usually a customs declaration form to hand in if you have goods to declare. Otherwise, walk straight through the green channel.

No, the eVisa is single-entry and cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must leave and reapply from outside the country.
Rejections are rare but can happen if your documents are incomplete or your passport doesn't meet the validity requirement. You can reapply after fixing the issue. There's no appeal process — just submit a new application.
Only if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (e.g., parts of South America or Africa). Mexico is not a risk country, so you won't need it unless you've recently traveled to one. Check the CDC or WHO list before your trip.
Yes, but the eVisa is valid for all ports of entry — air, land, or sea. If crossing by land from Botswana, Namibia, or Zimbabwe, present your eVisa printout at the border post. The same requirements (passport validity, return ticket) apply.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You may be fined, banned from re-entering for a period, or both. The fine is around ZAR 1,000–2,000 per day overstayed. Leave before your eVisa expires.
